Starter motor?

300 tdi

Battery is fine.

Headlights are nice and bright and don't dim after a few minutes use.

Immobiliser seems to be working OK.

Earths and battery connections seem OK too.

Turn the key and hear the relay click in the cab and the solenoid click under the bonnet....but the starter is silent and the engine doesn't turn over at all!

Dodgy solenoid (aka new starter)????

If possible get an assistant to turn the key whilst you hit with the hammer, with a bit of luck it should fire up, otherwise it gets a bit tedious and comical, When your trying to hit the starter motor and turn the key at the same time,

'cos trust me you cant Ive tried

A non-percusive, pacificist and grease free trick is (if a clear space behind permits) engage a high gear, release parking brake, open door, brace self against door frame and rock car backwards a bit (to move the flywheel a tiny bit).

Because the starter motor won't turn until the solenoid has pushed the dog forward, the motor don't go if the dog don't move. Happens very infrequently to me, and rocking fixes it solves the immediate problem. I probably ought to fix the problem properly ...

Well, removed the starter (Bosch) and stripped it down.

Solenoid was really clean, the rest of the motor was pretty grim!

Lots of grit and rust internally.

Cleaned it up the best I could and tested it with a spare battery - success - all worked fine.

Bolted it back onto the engine, turned the key and it started first time :D

Tried again and ...... click :(

Anyway, I popped down the the local specialists and bit the bullet.

I've just fitted a new (Bearmach) starter and all is well again.

Starts everytime :D

I'll pop the Bosch one into the local alternator/starter repair place and hopefully when fixed it can become a spare.

easy job to fix. Take it of, separate the solonoid. Free up the engaging spigot. Grease it up. Stick it all back together....

job done

Looks like I might have to strip my starter motor.

Bit of a basic question, what grease is recommended?

Regards

I have no idea what is 'recommended' (by manufacturers for example) but in the past when I have done this (many times) I have just used a fairly thin smear of normal grease - I don't know if it is important or not but I tend to avoid moly or graphite greases in case they conduct a little, but they would probably be ok too.

I am about to strip my RRC starter (not that there is a problem, it's just that I have it off at the moment) and so thought I might as well - anyway - this time, since I have it available and since I will be trying to make the starter more off-road friendly, I thought I would use waterproof grease.

If you are in a hurry then sometimes they respond well to liberal dousing with WD40 (or similar) and cyclical manual manipulation (fnarr fnarr) followed by bench 'testing' with jump leads - but make sure it is fastened down (ratchet strap it to something) since they have a vicious kick, oh and watch out for the WD40 'POP' and the big blue flames too...
