Les Henson
I wouldn't go that high - considering your oil should be 5/30. You are north Scotland? so quite cold right up there. Nearly 200k miles is quite a lot, so perhaps a little thicker oil to hide the rattle, but not 15/40. Les.
nicks90
funnily enough i was looking through the owners handbook for our lasses td5 disco at the weekend and it says the oil to use was either 5/30 or 10/40 for our UK climate conditions. i think 15/40 might be a bit thick though. Bowie69
The 15 is the cold figure isn't it? So once even vaguely warm the oil will be a 40 (so to spec), it's just under starting conditions it may struggle...
cackshifter
The 15 is the cold figure isn't it? True. Well Ok before the oil is 'warm' ie 100 deg anyway, and that takes a while. But that is just when the wear takes place. Have a read of linky. It's probably free for a good reason. Nigel
Aragorn
I would suspect the bigger issue is the TD5 probably wants synthetic oil, and 15w40 almost certainly wont be synthetic.
carlosbeldia
I used 15w40 when I just bought the car..... a total mess...... there was always a fight with engine in order to get it started at morning, a lot of fumes in the exhaust, and really bad performance in cold mornings. Changed to Mobil 1 was the best solution. Now, due to money problems, I'm using semi-synth Mobil 2000 10w40 with no issue at this moment. However, when 15w40 I was 2600 meters over sea level (cold mornings were 5 celsius), now I'm at sea level (cold mornings are 25 celsius). My advice: don't go with 15w40, your engine will thank you.
