thingybox Posted August 8, 2012 Share Posted August 8, 2012 I think I've got a knackered transfer box... Driving home, I noticed some very strange noises coming from under the seat box. A couple of bangs and thuds later and I have no gears... However, I locked the diff in high ratio and found forward and reverse gears, enough to limp home. There are no gears whatsoever in high or low ratios in normal drive unless the diff is locked. If I have forward and reverse gears with the diff locked, am I right in assuming that it's not the gearbox? Do I need to change the transfer box? Is it possible to change the transfer box myself? It's a standard Land Rover 90 with the 2.5TD 19J engine, LT77 gearbox and LT230 transfer box; none of these have been tampered with or upgraded in any way. Thanks! Disco-Ron Posted August 8, 2012 Share Posted August 8, 2012 Sounds like you've popped a front or rear diff, get someone to sit in the truck and 'drive' NOT in difflock, whichever prop is spinning is the one that's popped the diff! Either way I hope you've seen the damage, as you don't want to be charged for something that isn't there (sorry, but some garage owners - just like the rest of us - are less than honest). mmgemini Posted August 18, 2012 Share Posted August 18, 2012 Classic example of a broken drive shaft or diff somewhere. As you drove it home in diff lock, like I would have done I see no reason at all to even suspect the transfer box. Get the diff and drive shafts sorted first. thingybox Posted August 29, 2012 Author Share Posted August 29, 2012 I apologise for not replying sooner, work (kind of) gets in the way! The story so far... Took the 90 to the garage across the road. They diagnosed the problem as half shafts, diff and transfer box. I supplied them with a diff and half shafts from an axle I'd strpped down a couple of months ago. They said they could do it; a week later they said they couldn't but recommended me to another local garage who are supposed to be gearbox specialists. The greabox specialists kept the car for 4 days, promising it would be completed the following day, each day I called. I went down on the fourth day and they hadn't touched it so I pulled the 90. I took the 90 to where I should've taken to in the first place, Sean and Earl at AutoBody Repairs, Redditch. Earl removed the transfer box to reveal a chewed up rear shaft on the gearbox. Both advised me to get a reconditioned gearbox and transfer box, rather than secondhand items off eBay. Sean said that if the shaft was chewed up on the gearbox, it's likely that the corresponding part inside the transfer box would be severely damaged too. I bought the transfer box off eBay from Simba4x4 in Lye, West Midlands. The bloke was a really nice chap, not one of these that sighs heavily, sucking air thhrough his teeth muttering. He said that the transfer box was a good one as he had taken it out of a customer's Defender that had been extremely well maintained with only 65,000 miles on the clock. I bought the reconditioned gearbox off TM Transmissions in Bournville, Birmingham. Absolutely great chap! I took the old gearbox and transfer box as exchange and he charged me £350 for a reconditioned box with 12 months guarantee. I took the gearbox to Sean lunchtime today and the four of us (me, Sean, Earl and Marius) stood around it as if it was a thing of beauty (sad, I know - it's my age!)! Anyway, all that's being fitted today. Sean's going to sort out the diff and half shaft(s) tomorrow and I should have it back for Friday!
