Starting V8 after 6 months stored

Take the plugs out and crank till the oil light goes out, alternatively you can remove the dizzy and using a drill prime the system but you will need to make a slotted rod to with a sleeve to go over the oil pump drive shaft and turn clockwise.

Option 1 is far easier and you don't disturb the dizzy timing.

Also if its a serpentine v8 which has a crank driven pump the only option is to crank it over.

Unless there's something deeply wrong with the oil-pump or engine's insides it should self-prime after a few dozen revolutuions.

The engines were built "dry" [the 1970s/1980s BL Red-Robbo-era unions would never have allowed their members to handle dangerously-slippery oily bits without 'special risk' supplements] and they seemed to survive.

If you're paranoid: pull out the spark-plugs and shoot 10ml of 20W50 oil into each bore and let it stand for 24 hours before going for a start. Well-oiled piston rings mean good compression and give the engine a good chance of starting in seconds rather than minutes.

I'm assuming you have an ECU-based system and an electric fuel-pump that you know is working, and good fuel in the tank: If you do find yourself in a non-start-after-30-seconds, leave things for a minute or five for the starter-motor to cool then do a few ignition-on-wait-for-10-seconds-ignition-off cycles so the fuel-pump can prime clean fuel into the fuel-rails before trying again.

When it fires, expect the alternator drive-belt to squeal like a stuck pig for 30 seconds until the surface-rust is rubbed off the pulleys.

You are not using the distributor for anything other than driving the pump, so you have no timing to mess up if you want to drive it first.

I'd be tempted just to crank it over with the coil packs unplugged until the oil light goes out.

Edit: the feeds to the coil packs that is...
