Disco-Ron
I acquired a disco t box to go on my v8 90, I am just cleaning it up, and noticed a dollop of some sort of epoxy type gunge on the plate on the side of the centre diff, any particular reason??... obviously don't wanna fit it then find its terminally busted, hi and low engage, as does difflock..... Ta in advance!
Disco-Ron
Decided to remove the epoxy, plate had a hole in it, so looked inside, everything works, so removed the plate from another t box, job done.
mickeyw
Ron, what ratio trf box were you replacing? V8 90s were built with a unique 1.192:1 ratio transfer box. This works very well with 205 tyres and a manual gearbox.
Disco-Ron
Yup, that's what it had, now has a 1.22.... it wouldn't pull fifth, with 235 85's..... hopefully it'll be better now, if not, next step is 1.4....
Ex Member
Wouldn't pull 5th? In a V8? Something is not right with the engine then. I have a 1.2 in my TDI and it pulls 5th no problem.
Mo Murphy
I think the key thing here is the tyre size ie. 205 v 235. Have a play with the ratio calculator on the Ashcroft website. I suspect you'll need a 1.4 to get your ratios back. HTH Mo
Ex Member
Shouldn't matter. I run 35s and 32s. I have friends who run all sizes of tyres with a V8 and they all have 1.2. 5th gear should be no problem.
Disco-Ron
Its a bit tired yes, but would go well enough in 4th, just wouldn't maintain 70 in fifth, it lacks the torque of the diesels.....
FridgeFreezer
What they said, that sounds very wrong to me. I've just bought a 127 ambulance (big barge) and that will go up hills in 5th. It's supposedly got the 1.192:1 ratio LT230 and only a carbed V8 that's rather clearly in need of a tune up.
mickeyw
1.192:1 box was only fitted to 90s John. Your barge should have a 1.4:
FridgeFreezer
Ah, OK, I did say "supposedly" as I think it was mentioned in part of the description but I've not checked the sticker yet.
Landrovernuts
My V8 90 has a 1.2 transfer box and 265/75 tyres and pulls 5th easy even when towing. While it does have a 4.2 fitted, the previous 3.5 (injected) coped not so bad also. Toby

A 3.5 stock engine has the same maximum torque as a stock TDI, around 190 lb-ft. A 3.9 has 235 lb-ft or more. And they should hold the torque to a higher rpm level. Ex Member
Your better off spending your time putting in a new cam, chain and sprockets.
FridgeFreezer
Well, better off 1st step going over it to see what's wrong / worn out. Then rebuild with nice bits as budget allows.
mickeyw
My 90 has seen a few transmission changes in my ownership. When I bought it, it was running 7.50R16s and its original 1.22 t/box with the 3.5 carb lump up front. It pulled well in 5th, even seeing illegal speeds beginning with a 9 Later I added a 3.9 Efi, still with manual. Later still in went a 4 speed auto, and that made things horrible, with the gear shifts in all the wrong places (running 265/75R16 at the point). Motorway hills were a struggle, as it always needed to drop out of T/C lock up and into 3rd. The happy solution was found by fitting a 1.4:1 t/box, it's now a joy to drive, even with taller 255/86R16 tyres. Using the ratio calculator Fridge referred to above my setup has pretty much restored final drive ratio to how LR supplied it. Many owners of 50th anniversary 90s (4.0 auto + 265 tyres) have done the same transfer ratio change, as the vehicle is a tad sluggish with it's factory fitted 1.22:1 box. Alledgedly LR fitted this ratio for reasons of economy
