IanT90
I have several oil leaks but thought I would tackle awkward one first. Small constant drip. Question is how to get to and remove the old oil seal. Can I remove it from the front after removing prop shaft castlatated nut etc or will it require taking front diff cover off to access it ? Ie knock it out from the back ?
ejparrott
Assuming standard rover axle, just as you say.
IanT90
Great was hoping for quick fix with extraction from the front without having to take front cover off :-(
ejparrott
Why sad face? 30 minutes and you should be done, 5 bolts, pry, hammer in new, 5 bolts, drive off? Or did you think I meant you had to remove the diff? May have been a little unclear in my reply...
IanT90
Ah not as bad then thought might have meant taking all apart dont feel as bad now.
discomikey
mines just gone too, but in a rather spectacular way. im not sure if this is because i put a lot of minidigger behind it the other day, or because the breather is blocked somehow (i only put extended breathers on it just before i parked it up, maybe a spider has crawled in and made its home there) im supposed to drive up from cov to barton upon humber tomorrow, if my bits dont arrive tonight ill be in a spot of bother! especially as i have a special diff and dont want to damage it. the only thing is i wont know if its a breather or just the towing until im half way up the M1 most likely! :@
sighnbox
Don't bother unless its bad .......A new seal will last a month or two then it will start to drip again Ive had four in mine over the years and drip drip drip still .......Aparantly a land rover specialist told me the part of the actual casing wears inside when they get older so you can never really mend it properly ...Ive tried new shaft every thing and still.......drip drip drip......So now I just replace it when it gets bad and thay slows it right off for 2-3 years
IanT90
Saw topic on u tube where oil seal was leaking. It was replaced then vent checked and was blocked. So worth checking if you get a pressure release when you undo the vent you have a clue. Saw advert on utube for gearbox additive that helps to seal leaks don't remember make but appears to work. Don't know what impact is on the oil efficiency but if it works may be good cure for persistant leaks when new seal fitted ?
IanT90
The additive is ATP AT_205 its a liquid polymer acts on dry seals add to gearbox or diff casing and it starts working within 5 hours of operation. Lots of positive revues on amazon some claim full cure some say it slows the leak. Anyway just a suggestion might be okay for odd drip leak ! I've used Whynn oil additive with good results on my Kia Sorento (which is somewhere in a desert by now with a gun on its roof.... of already dead)
