Wiring Carling type rocker switch

Recommended Posts

You are rotating the back of the switch, so need to rotate the rocker and the leds, done by rotating the whole front half of the switch in relation to the rear. The body splits in two with some clips on the short sides. Ease them apart gently to avoid losing the springs - ideally do it over a large white cloth or towel that will prevent them rolling off and will show them easily. If you carry out the separation with the switch orientated with the terminals pointing straight down, and carefully keep it that way, then you will be able to see the innards in their correct places, which will be a big help. A third hand or a vice will be beneficial.

You don't want to disturb those innards if you can avoid it, so leave the rear section upright and to one side while you sort out the front half - you do need to reroute the legs of the LEDs or bulbs in the top half to the opposite corners before refitting the whole front half rotated 180 degrees to its original fitting. You'll see how the bulb legs are retained when you open it up. Be warned that switches with LEDs rather than bulbs have tiny resistors loose in the spring guide tubes, probably under the springs but maybe on top, and they would be very easy to lose. You need to make sure that each LED has the correct resistor (should be different ratings for different colour LEDs if you have that option and Carling were diligent), so you need to swap the springs an resistors diagonally to match the LED legs. If you have bulbs, there are no resistors, only long springs which don't need swapping as long as there is one in each corner - if there are only three, move the "blank" diagonally.

Ha! Glad to find I'm not the only uber-Geek who hates 'upside-down' American switches.

Gentlemen, there is now an easy solution: buy the 'Carling Contura XIV rocker', available from Mud UK.

http://www.mudstuff.co.uk/carling-contura-xiv-rockers.html

This has two identical translucent windows, and is symmetrical. Replace the standard rockers (using the correct tool, also available from Mud), then rotate the switch bodies by 180 degrees.

Result! All will now be right with the world, and you can sleep at night without nightmares about switches which are on when they should be off :o.
