David Sparkes
I can't (won't) do picture posting to the forum. The Parts Section is called Steering Column Lower, but contains 'Shaft Assembly-Intermediate steering Linkage'. This page shows a lower UJ, supplied as a separate item. Also shown is a shaft containing a sliding joint, that only moves in the event of an accident, what is possibly a flex joint, circular, to absorb vibration (?), and an upper UJ. Everything in that last sentance is one item, I'll call it a 'complex shaft'. Originals, comprising both the complex shaft AND the lower UJ, were QMN100320 up to VIN XA232916 (thats '99 Model Year in 38A speak), followed by QMN100330 from VIN XA232917 to 3A802783. The lower UJ only was QLC 100090, followed by QLC 100110, split at the VINs already quoted. There is only one Complex shaft listed, QLB 100050, but only up to VIN XA232916. For all these, the clamp bolts securing the UJs to the shafts are pictured as domeheaded Torx, but are only described as 'Bolt Steering Shaft, Special' QMW100060 or 100070, split at the VINs already quoted. Next, we have a Kit, Steering Column Repair. Different for Right or Left hand drive. You haven't said, so I assume RHD. This is the complex shaft AND the UJ, QME500020, from VIN 3A802784. The complex shaft is not numbered separately, but the lower UJ is, Kit Steering Column Repair, Joint Assembly, Lower, and is QLE500010, from VIN 3A802784. The bolts here are PICTURED as Hex with a built in washer, but are DESCRIBED as Bolt Special, patch Lock, M8 x 33, Torx. part QYG000030. Now if only you had given us the VIN, it would have saved an awful lot of key presses. It's no wonder the Disco boys and girls don't come out to play when you call. :-)) I don't have prices. Hi John, Is the disco 2 spline smaller than the ordinary def/d1/rangerover? In that case, I might have a uj which I bought in error on old sodbury a few years back. It had an ordinary spline on one end, and a smaller spline on the other. I think it is a p38 part, not sure. I will have a dig in the box with ods and sodds this weekend. Failing that, have a look at this: http://www.howeperformance.com/accessories-ujoints.htm You could make a conversion uj by buying 2 sizes and make up one out of the parts from these. How about the track rod, could you share the solution with us for that end? Daan
Petes
It is the smaller splined fitting on teh UJ for a D2 yes. Equicar will probably do you a new lower column assy for £25. I got one from them. Pete

If the spline is ~17mm major diameter then that's probably right, if you can post it down to me I will sort out some beer tokens How about the track rod, could you share the solution with us for that end? Well, I got a pair of DII track rods with ball joints for a few quid at Sodbury, as far as I'm aware they're standard Land Rover TRE's. For making it the right length, I know a couple of guys... Guest diesel_jim
I've got a complete steering shaft, it looks like a new type defender (with the aluminium UJ's not the cast steel ones) but is too short for a 'fender. so god knows what it's out of, i'll measure it if it's of any use to you??? FridgeFreezer
Jim, That would be cool, however I'm pretty sure you'll find it's a normal spline (~19mm major diameter, fine splined) not DII. If not I'll gladly take it off your hands.
FridgeFreezer
I'll answer my own question then... With a little help from Slimer & V8Bertha (thanks guys!) QLE500010 (Disco II steering-box-end UJ) fits onto QME500031 (Defender? shaft with a UJ either end) The UJ has the "weird" spline in one end and the normal column attachment in the other. Which means by the end of the weekend the 109 will have steering, woo yay!
Daan
Sorry fridge, I havent got the uj anymore; got lost during two international housemoves somehow... Daan
