Yolandi
New one for me, my 110 has started vibratiting strongly (and noisely) when going downhill over 55mph, but only if the engine speed is matching the wheels or accelerating, as soon as you let off the gas its instantly smooth, and ideas? rich broom
Are the bolts right and correct length prop
rich broom
Tight I meant
Yolandi
All bolts are new and as tight as i can get them bar one, one of the previous bolts was used again for whever reason, its slightly shorter and a bit rubbish looking
Yolandi
Oh forgot to say, the 3 new bolts are stainless and the 1 other is steel, would that be enough to throw the balance?
Peaklander
Has the prop been separated into its two pieces? If so, it needs to be assembled with the two yokes slightly out of direct alignment. There's a small difference of two spline positions (which is 22.5 degrees / a sixteenth of a full turn) to allow for the angles of the flanges on the transfer box front take off and the front diff. I don't know if your symptoms could be caused by this but it's worth checking anyway if the prop's been off.
Yolandi
I can confirm that the two yokes are slightly out of alignment
Bowie69
It won't cause your problem, but is wouldn't be using stainless bolts in a prop.
dailysleaze
Do you have a suspension lift?
Yolandi
How come not stainless? My local garage did this when my uj collapsed, they have had a good record in the past but kinda bodged this one
Aragorn
Stainless bolts arent as strong as normal HT steel bolts. I would expect a propshaft to be attached with 10.9 grade bolts. Most stainless steel doesnt even match 8.8 grade.
Yolandi
Aragorn - ah right Dailysleaze - no i dont, suspension is standard as far as im aware
Bowie69
Indeed. My understanding is they don't stretch as much, more brittle, so could fail. A prop is under some fairly high stress, especially on a 110. Your noise could also be a pinion bearing,
Yolandi
Mk, the garage told me that stainless has higher shearing force than steel amd thats what you want in a twisty thing not so much a pulling. but if it was a bearing wouldnt the vibration continue when i let off the accelerator
Bowie69
Even if they are, you do not want bolts with a lower elasticity, because they can deform, and then they come loose. What your mechanic is telling you is not true. Bearing noise can act exactly that way.
Yolandi
Ah ok, ill swap them out for steel when i change the pinion seal which is currently leaking, how do i check the bearing?
Bowie69
Just check for play side to side and in/out. Any perceptible movement can be noisy. The fact the seal is leaking means it is more than possible the bearing is toast.
Yolandi
Ok thanks
