western
alternator rectifier fault showing itself, may be worth having the alternator bench tested by a local auto electrics, if it is faulty get them to repair it.
DC_
Check also all your wires, make sure they are clean and nothing out of the ordinary. Also check the solenoid connections. Might be a loose or poor connection. Worth while while you're at it, clean all earths.
Mean Green
My 200 is doing the same. The light glows dimly, but goes off when I switch the lights on or put on any load.
western
may need the idle rpm checking/adjusting. idle for 200/300 Tdi should be 750 to 850rpm, if to low alternator won't 'excite' to put the light out.
Leaky40
Highly likely to be the brushes attached to the regulator/rectifier. Mine was acting the same a couple of years ago. Spent £8 on a replacement on eBay and not had an issue since. It could be another issue but if the bushes are worn or got mud stuck in them they don't contact properly. Easy to replace with a little patience and time. Hope this helps out.
