TDCi Puma engine shut down (intermittent)

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

Hope this is in the right section. Just signed up because, frankly, I am rather stuck! I work as a contractor for Western Power and we have Defenders. Our 08 plate 110 is playing up. Starts, runs, drives. For a bit. Then the engine shuts down to something like 500RPM. No throttle response during this fault. Switch off, restart and all is well again - until the next time! Had a very good mechanic friend of mine plug it in and it showed Turbo Underboost and EGR faults. HOWEVER, now it's showing no codes and the problem is still present. We didn't clear the codes the last time and now they've vanished. It will also rev its guts out any time it feels like it, from idle. A blip on the throttle usually cures that but it's still annoying. Being a "Special Vehicles" thing built for utility companies it's fully loaded with inverters and gadgets, winches, 100VAC etc including a digital throttle control in the back of the vehicle (only mentioning as I thought maybe it would help)

She's in the garage as I write this, mechanic (very good mechanic too) is leaning towards EGR valve.

Any thoughts?

Any help much appreciated!

Thanks for the replies, tomorrow we will disconnect the EGR (this should trigger a fault code) and drive it around a bit. I've read that disconnecting the MAF sensor effectively blanks off the EGR electronically, does this sound right or a bit of nonsense? If that doesn't have some effect then yes, could be the rear mounted throttle control :/ I hope not though because we need that. Then again we also need the engine to run!

Cam or crank sensor would be my first port of call but do double check the battery terminal clamps as well as others have reported odd faults only to find the clamps were loose, also check all the relays mounted in the drivers seatbox for security and good connections. You could move onto the instrument cluster then the 10AS alarm unit behind the dash on the right side.

Only irritation from my end with it being cam or crank position sensor is it should produce a fault code but it isn't :/

I've heard about relay problems and haven't checked there yet. Probably should before anything more serious! Battery connections.... please don't tell me it's spent 2 days under inspection for that!! That's now job number one in the morning! And if it does turn out to be that... I will NEVER admit it! EVER!!

Another update...

All battery connections/fuses/relays are sound and have no identifiable faults. Gave a full and thorough service (just cos) and the fuel filter contained no nasty surprises, a bit of cack but nothing unusual. Had extra super duper diagnostics brought in, showed two faults. Immobiliser error and something about fuel pressure. Cleared faults, engine ran for 20 mins and didn't stall, but that's nothing to go by as the fault is totally random. There is now much head scratching and the words 'pump' and 'knackered' are being mentioned...

Hi, hoping someone can help.

Having exactly the same problem, occasionally the revs will just drop to 500rpm with no response from the pedal, also occasional complete lack of power for maybe 1/2 a second. The lack of response from the pedal makes me think it probably is electrical, rather than any fuel starvation issue, there is no in-between situation, either 100% or 0%, but gradient seems to be a contributing factor.

No registered faults, and putting a new EGR valve on (which was previously throwing a fault), hasn't cured it. Local specialist has been unable to diagnose, but seems from this thread that its not unheard of. Becoming a bit of a liability and have been stranded in the middle of a busy junction for a few seconds.
