jameshub Posted January 30, 2013 Share Posted January 30, 2013 I have an ex-MOD Defender 90 and having real difficulty with the High and Low gears........to the extent that i can't tell which one i am in or more worryingly when i put it in Low (or what i think is Low), i can then no engage the normal gears, so can't basically go anywhere..... any suggestion welcome Thanks Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Eightpot Posted January 31, 2013 Share Posted January 31, 2013 Check the lever is operating correctly first - remove the transmission tunnel cover and when you can see the drivers side of the gearbox, move the hi-low lever forward and back and check the operating rods are moving and pivoting correctly, and the selector shaft into the transfer box is moving nicely. It would appear that most people are saying drive it in High (right/ back) - is this the case or should it be in neutral? Does driving it in High not affect fuel consumption? Les Brock Posted January 31, 2013 Share Posted January 31, 2013 You aint got one so ignore it The leaving the transfer box in the middle(Neutral) to confuse thieves still is, but dont forget to engage before you drive away or you won't be going anywhere fast !!! FridgeFreezer Posted January 31, 2013 Share Posted January 31, 2013 High = high speed = road Low = low speed, basically puts a "divide-by-3" on the back of your gearbox, you would know if you were in low because you wouldn't get much above 30mph, even in 5th Oh and DO NOT drive in difflock on hard (tarmac/concrete/road) surfaces as you will break it. The 4x4 system has been explained at length numerous times, a bit of searching on the forum or googling or reading the user manual / RAVE manual should clear it up.
