studmuffin
I am gradually changing all the fasteners on my TD5 Defender to stainless steel. I am looking at some point to change the bolts on the tow hitch to SS. I just read in LRO that stainless bolts are structurally weaker than the 8.8 bolts fitted by LR( presume they are high Tensile). Can I buy SS bolts to the same tensile??? Fasteners are not my strongpoint. Any help gratefully appreciated. Cheers Barry
western
IIRC you need to find A4-80 grade stainless bolts, these have a comparative strength to Mild steel 8.8HT I stayed with standard 8,8HT bolts for any safety related parts, tow kit, suspension, steering during my 110's chassis change. all my SS fixings have been bought from http://www.a2stainless.co.uk/ he has a LR section http://www.a2stainless.co.uk/Land-Rover_B2142O.aspx

miketomcat
I would only use stainless for non structural items and use tefgel or duralac to stop corrosion issues. Stainless will never equal an 8.8 steel bolt they simply aren't the same. Don't forget landy rover spent a lot of time/money specifying a bolt for a reason. Anderzander
What form are the tefgel / duralac ? Is it like copper slip ?
miketomcat
Duralac is kind of like a paint and tefgel is a bit like a gooey copper slip both can be painted over. Tefgel is easier to disassemble but both act as barrier between dissimilar metals. Mike
western
What form are the tefgel / duralac ? Is it like copper slip ? Nope, this is Duralac http://www.silmid.com/products/duralac-jointing-compound-500ml-dtd369b.aspx also used on aircraft to prevent disimilar metal corrosion. missingsid
My main concern with stainless came from building bikes, bolts didn't seem to stay done up and shook loose!
