hi i have posted a topic on a miss fire under load . somebody asked me if it was in any particular gear . anyway it acured to me that it wasnt a missfire it may be the gearbox or transferbox . i am getting a rumble/judder in low revs in 4th and 5th geari looked under and i have oil all over the transfer box but the gearbox is dry. there is a little bit on the handbrake drum im not sure whether thats running back though can anybody tell me if its fixable or do i need a recon transfer box or do you think it may be the gear box. the gear box changes well and smooth and hi and low work well on the transfer box. any advise or help would be great .

the timing was done 18 months ago and it was spot on but the cogs where showing sighns of wear the filters where done about the same time it only happenes when i chang to 4th 0r 5th until the revs pick up or going up a steep hill

hi can anybody tell me the symptoms of a worn out transfer box? or any other transfer box symptoms

try new filters all round the more air the better

it stops when you over run and i noticed tonight a humming when i turn right but theres no clicking at all i think the engine is too loud to hear it but there is a lot of play between the front wheels and the prop if you jack them up

that all depends on what engine you have but even the latest defenders are restricted to about 85 they have stability problems. they dont go fast they go anywere P.S that is realy funny that you thought it was broke.

that sounds normal to me if its a td mine only goes 60 i think the top speed is only 72

hi how do i know if a rumbling noise when pulling is my cv joints or my diff ? the noise seems to be the front end iv changed the universal joints on the prop.

when i push down nothing happens i changed the motor and park switch but still nothing

has anybody seen my solonoid ? its not in the usual place (behind the fuses)

hi i have a 1990 defender i have took it apart today to find the solanoid but i carnt find it . my wipers only have 2 settings slow and slower is this right or is there surposed to be an intermitant?

i have just had exactly the same and it turned out the arm on the clutch was about to give up. it punched a hole straight through the arm it wasnt an expensive job but it was a good days work

i took the gearbox out today what a mission that is on your own . it was the clutch arm so i welded it back up and reinforced it with a steel plate it all seems fine now . im just off to put the seats and floor back and thats me done thanks guys.

i have a look tomorow but all the hydrolics are new so its looking like its the fork then . ill let you know over the weekend how i get on.

just drove home with no clutch. while driving home the clutch went to the floor suddenly and then there was just nothing. the clutch has done about 5000 miles so i dont think its the plate or i wouldnt be able to drive it . has anybody got any idea whats going on? P.S its a 2.5td if that makes a difference

ujs not shocking but they are showing sighns of wear and the 90 is totaly standerd

i took the front prop off today and the juddery rumble stopped so im pretty sure its the front end . is there anyway of telling whats gone (diff or cv joints) ?

i think taking the rear shafts out sounds like a plan . the other thing is when you dip the clutch everything feels smooth wich makes me think gearbox or transfer box problem but i dont know much about them to be honest so any help would be great

hi i went for a drive today and noticed that there was a judder when going up hills it seemed to be from the backend has anybody got any ideas . it has a new prop the diff seems ok i fitted new bearings . it is a big rumble you can feel it through the car . the gearbox changes smoothly and the transfer box engages ok . the judder stops when you pull off the gas . P.S the engine seems fine
