  1. Hi all, do we have co-ordinates for the campsite and routes available? We have just recieved our Xmas present (a Garmin GPS) and would like to give it a go with some "real routes" if possible. Figured that we may as well do it whilst we are following someone, just to get an idea of how it works/displays etc. We are looking forward to the weekend. I've installed a CB today and have dug out the winter sleeping bags. Did someone say -3'C Mmmm, goose down
  2. Hi all, thought I'd post a little report for those of you who haven't done the door lock mechanism on a D2 yet. You know the problem, the lock won't open off the key fob so you think it'll be worth changing it so that you don't have to use the key to get in the drivers door every time. Well after 3 hours, lots of swearing and one "oh sh*t" moment I've finished it. This is by no means a comprehensive guide but more a few tips for those planning to do this. 1) You have to remove the door trim obviously. Not too much of a job although all of the screws ere very tight and now a bit rounded. I'll need new ones before I remove the trim again. I should have had some to hand this time really. Same goes for the Torx screws, they are REALLY tight and a bit soft. I shall replace them with new ones if I ever take them out again. 2) You then have to remove the window and frame. Yup. There is no way of doing the job without, I tried, and tried, but it wasn't happening. So my advice is to get straight in and take it out from the start. It gives you lots of room to work with as well, there is a surprisingly large gap looking down the top of the door once it's out. I used duct tape as marks on the frame to help with the refit. You could be a mm or two out so it's worth it. 3) Once you've removed the lock and popped the new one in TRY AND TRY AGAIN to make sure that it works BEFORE fitting the window back in. Mine didn't. DO NOT SHUT THE DOOR UNTIL YOU ARE SURE THAT IT WORKS. You can't open the door once you have shut it. It turns out it was the cable from the interior door handle. I'd popped it back in too high a position in the clip and this stops you using the exterior and interior handles to open the door. Yup, if the door is shut at this stage you have a problem!! That was my "oh sh*t) moment. They don't seem to open by manually operating the lever, you can't quite get the movement you need. First thing to try is relocating the interior handle cable. 4) Once it's all working refit everything. I would have liked a new plastic sheet that's behind the trim. I shall make sure I have one for next time. On this occassion duct tape has sealed it up. 5) Wash your hands, and have a well earned cup of tea. It is a one person job and could be done in 2 hours if all goes well and you don't lock the door with no way of opening it. How on earth you'd manage to do this if the lock broke completely and you couldn't open the door I don't know. You couldn't remove the window frame even if you could get the trim out. I would certainly say that they are theif proof!

I posted this eleswhere but it might be of interest (things we learned when shopping around): Only recently bought mine, but we looked at a few... A couple of bits I did notice (apart from the usual checks): Our injector loom has been replaced. It has a black conector at the end of the rocker cover, they were red originally from what I can gather. Can't be certain but it would seem that black is the modified one. Only £40 anyway. Door locks - every one that we looked at had a lock that didn't work from the remote. Mine was the drivers door so it was obvious, but others were rear doors so you might not notice. A new one is £45 from Gordon Lamb on Ebay (by far the cheapest). You can't replace just the solenoid, you have to buy the complete mechanism. If they have been regularly and correctly serviced then there shouldn't be any problems with the dowels. If they have had a new head on then I'd be walking away, it means it's probably been neglected. We were offered one with £2000 worth of work done (head replaced, steel dowels etc) at 80k miles. I didn't feel reassured. A few of the manuals we drove had a slight judder when letting the clutch out. We started to think it was normal, but obviously it isn't. Ours doesn't do this. There will be a noise when you switch off the engine. It's the oil filter winding down, nothing to worry about when you know what it is Not sure if you are bothered about a difflock, some have them, some don't. I think that the earlier models did, then the mid models didn't, then the later models had it in the box but no linkage to the selector If it's important to you then I'd research this some more, or buy one that you know has it (ie the selector moves over!) I opted for the manual, my personal preference. I know that the autos seem to be prone to the gearboxes running hot and cooking oil, another reason to get one with full service history (then change the oil every 12k instead of the scheduled 24k). Hope some of this is of use. We did A LOT of miles, looked at A LOT of trucks before finally finding what we think is a good 'un. Cheers, M&S
  4. Well we are glad that we can come along, although we hope it's not at the expense of others or making things too crowded. If you can add one more to the camping list for Saturday night then that would be great. We shall bring the winter bags Looking forward to seeing everyone. We have the OS map for that area also as we have done a fair bit of walking there in the past. Cheers, Martin & Stephanie This isn't just any 4x4. This is the finest 4x4...crafted from whatever we had left in the parts bin on Friday afternoon
  5. Hi all, I know I'm new to the forum but is there still room in Johns group for a Disco2 on road tyres? We would be coming down from Durham (close to Mike and Margret) and like Mike, we don't mind a few scratches. I always hope not to get any damage when driving off-road though, so don't drive like a madman I've done a fair bit of laning in the past with a Freelander and recently did the Langdale Quest in the D2 without any problems (just to give you an idea of my experience). Which OS map are you using? We might already have one. We would probably end up camping on the Saturday night. Cheers, Martin & Stephanie
  6. I was going to ask a question but think it fits in with this thread a bit, so hopfully you don't mind me asking here? How good are the headlights on your D2 (I have the new fancy ones also). Driving home last night we both commented on how rubbish the headlights seem to be. High is fine, but low is pants Stephanie said that as we passed other cars on the motorway our lights seemed to be shining the same distance as theirs on the road. Maybe it's because we are sat higher up that they don't seem as effective? I have to assume that they are set correctly as it has passed the MOT and they shouldn't have moved since then... Just an observation, and wondering what you think. Cheers.
  7. There is someone on Ebay that might be worth a look, by the name of "tazmanualdevil" whos CD contains the latest RAVE plus Autodata (workshop software) I'm in no way related to or affiliated with the seller.
  8. I had to have a look, for a second I was trying to think where the beach is at Stockton. Then realised your on the other side of the globe
  9. I've just had a look at the website and would love to have come. Then I looked at the map and realised it wasn't actually that far north... I'll keep it in mind for if we are ever in that area though, looks fun
  10. That's a good point. Mine has been done on the inside also and as waxoyl actually treats corrosion, as well as preventing it, any that might have started should be nipped in the bud so to speak. I do think it's worth chatting with your local garage and discussing your needs, you might be surprised at how cheaply they will do it...

    Hi all

Thanks for that, I've just emailed him
  12. Hello, I recently had my 2004 TD5 chassis waxoyled at a local garage. They have done a good job of it. It's not something that they advertsied but I discussed it with them and they were happy to give it a go. We are happy with the end results and hopefully it will keep any rust at ay for a good few more years. Heres a quick photo:

    Hi all

Hi everyone, I was sent here from another forum and after reading lots thought I'd sign up B) (actually, I was originally sent here to look for someone called "porny" regarding EGR kits for my 2004 Discovery Commercial ) We are preparing our Disco for overland trips, the first of which we hope will be Morocco in the New Year, the second Nepal in 2010. Hoping that we can contribute to the forum and learn from other Disco 2 owners. Cheers for now, M&S
