  1. Thanks Tom. Got the mesh from here: http://www.metals4u.co.uk/products.asp?Cat_ID=133 I've enough spare for rear light guards and side window grilles.
  2. Hi all, was wondering if anyone had fitted any light guards similar to the RRC ones, or even those off an RRC to the Discovery 2? The plastic guards from LR look rubbish (in that I don't think they offer much protection). Any other ideas for light guards would be appreciated.
  3. Hi all, thought I'd post pics of the steering guard and window mesh now fitted. I made the mesh guard myself and am very happy with the result The steering guard came from CCS Components and is very well made. You need to remove the metal bar that the lower part of the front bumper is attached to, and the lashing eye. I also cut away most of the middle of the front bumper att the bottom. It had cracked anyway and this also made accessing the recovery points easier. I think that I will be drilling some 2" holes in it to lighten it a bit and allow for water/mud to escape.
  4. WOW! I wouldn't have thought a new sunroof would have been that expensive even at the stealers. But as said, you don't need the full sunroof, just the seal. I'd be bringing that fact up with them and see there reply. Maybe threaten with trading standards (they are obviously selling you a part that isn't needed)? You might be able to get the new seal fitted for no extra cost, considering they have already stripped the rooflining etc. You've paid them to remove the lining anyway, you may as well have them fit the seal otherwise you'll be having to finish the job yourself.
  5. Popped to Unipart today and they have Fully Synthetic 5W/30 for £51 for 25 litres. That's including VAT. I think £2 per litre fully synthetic is a very good, that's about £15 per service

    Oops!

Looking at that I'd be going for another Disco for sure! Glad you are all here to tell the tale. I've seen many similar accidents where the occupants weren't so lucky. Also I hope that they catch the D3 owners. Even if they didn't realise that they caused the accident, the fact they stopped then drove off...they should have offered help, called the emergency services etc.
  7. They are a genuine LR part, so unless you try your main dealer I think that you will only get them from a scrap yard? Easy enough to remove, just screwed through the roof from inside. For what it's worth, I am 99% sure that Disco 1 bars will fit, so that might make your search easier.
  8. Cheers for that, very useful. Also, my appologies but I think I've been a complete muppet about this also. So as not to confuse anyone else reading this thread I'd like to clarify from the LR handbook the following regarding the oil: Use Castrol 5W/30 Engine oil meeting specification ACEA A1+B1. 5W/30 will protect from -30'C to +35'C I've since found that this specification is met with several semi or part synthetic oils, and so I do not need a fully synthetic oil. So this one should do the trick, especially if I get my trade card accepted http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/...Param=9.50#dtab I've never cared this much before, I've always stuck the cheapest oil in from Unipart. It must be love Thanks all, not sure why I got so confused with this, must have been having a blonde day
  9. Thanks, your advice is appreciated. It's interesting that you are saying the rotor filter is changed more often than the cartridge filter. Am I correct in reading that? So if you were changing the oil at 6k, would you change just the rotor filter then also? And then do the rotor and cartridge at 12k. I'd be interested to know what Land Rovers recommended service schedule is for vehicles used off-road...
  10. Not yet, will be going for a wash later today now that we are finally back home proper.

    New Tyres

I've just collected some 16" steels and have a similar dilema. BFG's are great, no doubt about it. But teh are expensive. I have also been considering the Colways, but as we do a lot of long journeys on motorways I'm reluctant to go with a remould. Anyone using using Kuhmo KL71's? I've been told they are like the BFG AT's on teh road, but like the BFG MT's off it? And at £70 a corner a bit better priced.
  12. Ah, ok. Cheers Jim. I'll change it at 12k anyway I think, and the cartridge every 6k with the oil.
  13. Hi mate, good to hear from you. No point being shy is there, that's what we bought it for I had/hadn't forgotten about the gate, I was waiting for the bill. As you can see, we've been away/busy/holidaying and such. But thank her anyway, and thanks to you also. I'm sure a few pints will square it up when we next get together A new rear light is £28, so actually more than the gate. Bloomin Land Rover dealers know how to charge Got a steering guard fitted now, which involved cutting most of the front bumper away anyway, so that cracked bit from Stanage is now in the bin
  14. Glad I read this all the way through. Would have added my thoughts but already covered. Didn't expect the oil pump to have been the problem though. Also, not doubting your friend but I suspect that the oil light was on. Perhaps he didn't notice it, the dash isn't that user friendly on Landys, it's easy to have the steering wheel block most of it depending on your driving position. Or maybe it was a cold morning, he was half asleep, just didn't see it. So the oil pump went, he kept driving, then the vacum pump seized. The belt then ran hot, perhaps causing the already worn bearings of the alternator (at 147k it's doing well) to finally give up before snapping the belt. With regards to the water pump, on mine the water pump is driven from the power steering pump, so if the pulley you were turning was on the top right as you face the engine then you would have been turning the power steering pump as well as the water pump. This might give you that hydraulic pump feeling I guess something that we can all learn from this is: 1) If the oil light comes on stop immediately! 2) If something does break and you are not sure what else it runs/affects then do not keep driving. 3) As said, check the nut on your oil pump. If LR really did fix this issue with loctite then I'll not bother dropping my sump just yet, but it will be coming off before our overland trip. Hope he gets it all sorted out.
  15. Thanks Les, have edited my post, should have said I was thinking of using 5W40 synthetic. I have the Britpart filters fitted at the moment (last service was at an independant) which are cheap enough as you say. But the Britpart centrifugal filter is as noisy as anything compared to the genuine LR filter. At £18.99 for the genuine filter though I don't want to replace it if it's not needed as I'm effectively doubling my service costs. It's done 126k miles, runs lovely, full history etc. Cheers, Martin
  16. Hi all, Due to give the Disco (2004 TD5) a 6k oil and filter change but am reading conflicting specs. Could someone please help clarify the following: 1) Which oil? The handbook says 5W30 fully synthetic, Haynes says 5W40 Fully synthetic and Halfrauds chart says 10W/40 semi-synthetic. So which is it? I'd like to think I could get away with semi-synthetic as I'm changing it every 6k? 2) Filters... I have just come across this statement which agrees with the service sheet: "the use of an centrifugal oil filter beside the normal filter. This cleans the oil by centrifugal force and accumulates dirt in an disposable metal pot that must be replaced every 36.000 miles (57000 km). In this way oil and standard filter exchange intervals have been extended to 12.000 miles." My thinking is: At 6k replace the engine oil with 5W40 synthetic oil and change the normal cartridge filter. At 12k replace the engine oil and both oil filters (as well as the other sevice items). I'd pop in and ask at the dealers, but to be honest they will probably give me a different answer depending on the day of the week!
  17. I guess you are driving on pay and play sites for you to be having such issues? If so a winch might be a better option for you?
  18. Your memory serves you correctly Still, the duck tape doesn't look too bad now it's been on a few days
  19. Hi all, thought I'd share yesterdays laning trip with you, seeing as I've been away for a while. Had a great 2 weeks holiday in Ireland. The D2 is certainly THE car to have for touring B) Yesterday we decided to tackle the doctors gate lane. Was a good lane, quite tricky in sections and certainly not one I'd recommend in the ice... We got stuck once but we thought we might before choosing the line (the ruts were just a bit too deep even though it was firm ground). As we had another vehicle with a winch we thought we'd give it a go, and it turned out a good opportunity for all involved to practice recovery techniques on a nice day without rushing. I'll let the pics speak for themselves. What you won't see is the large crack in the front bumper. Oh well, we've been eyeing up a steel replacement for a while now
  20. Just a question for those in the UK - are these legal/compatible with airbags?
  21. I'll be going for one when my Nokia packs up (can't afford to change for the sake of it). Mine will be a proper MANS PHONE though

    18" D3 Wheel

Ah, like everything else then Hopefully I'll have some steels soon, so I'll get my wheels in the classifieds. They did ok today in the snow actually, but I'll feel better when I get some 16" AT's on it

    18" D3 Wheel

Would 18" Disco 2 wheels fit, I might be able to help you out with a set of those (5)..?
  24. No rock, the wheel is really in the air (look at the front N/S, you can see how far up that's tucked Nice shots Chris, don't recognise the lane in the first one?
