  1. Just looked at the first photo again and the 110 parked alongside is of 85 vintage yours is definitely older original build. I guess it's possible yours is one of the last sliding window out of the factory then it's traveled half way round the world. Failing that it could of come to NZ later and they got the age wrong when registering. If I remember correctly you can decide the chassis number to give the original build year.

  2. The body style suggests earlier. As far as I know that style was 83-84, 85 went lift up handles but with wind up windows and the rear sliding windows were in a separate frame. Other differences on the earlier 110's are the rear shocks are one front one back, the grill panel has a lock mounted in it, no ash tray in the top dash panel and series pedals. I would think it's an earlier 110 that was registered later perhaps old stock.

  3. We regularly fit two smaller battery's wired in parallel or series (depending on application). As said above two new identical battery's treated as a single battery is best or charged and discharged together. I would use the existing cabling or replace with the same section but use a slightly larger section between the two battery's. We normally leave them connected together but isolated from the rest of the boat. Current install is two 50amp blue top optima's wired for 24 volts to start two (one at a time) 6 pot 180hp ford D series mermaid diesels in a fairey super swordsman.

    Good news Mike!

I guess that means you've passed the baton to me as we're looking to get our house on the market!

Dear God I hope you have a better time. The whole thing took us a year with 9 months from offer to completion. I truly believed on several occasions including upto a week before that it was never going to happen. Still I've a workshop to Re-build or maybe replace now.

  5. I have to say over here it is common practice to use a tow ball for recovery, in fact on several occasions I've used one over a "recovery point" because I wasn't comfortable with the fabrication. The only time I've seen a ball fail there was a large selection of cross member still attached. I think in aus the gross weight of off road vehicles is considerably higher than Europe thus the failures.

  6. I used the hitch you mention for many years on the back of 45. It's a good compromise. The ball is replaceable however mine never wore or bent. I towed everything with mine from Sankeys to boat trailers with rather more than the towing limit (low speed manoeuvring). I never had any issues using it for recovery mind I do have mechanical sympathy. It's worth noting you can only tow Sankey's with a rotating ring and commercial rings don't fit. The only reason I don't still have one is both truck have a Dixon bate adjustable slider so I have two ball hitches on sliders and one NATO that can be put on either truck.

Finally they're good for touch parking  and I would happily have another.

I can see the wood as being an extremely useful forma for @miketomcat to make some custom (genuine) carbon fibre or glass fibre panels from

I think I made 5 in total in the end (I've still got the mould).

  8. Curve ball not rugged as such but I've got a fairphone 3. I've dropped mine several times and I work in a boat yard with it in my pocket. The reason I bought it was a couldn't find a rugged phone I liked/could afford and every part is easily replaceable so if I break it I can fix it.
