  1. Very nice mate, glad to see there is some good sand to play on back home. Try your climb at 12psi and I bet your 200tdi will fly up the dunes.
  2. Very nice mate, it must have been a battle playing in the sand in a heavily loaded old bus like that. Good fun though.
  3. Streaky, where`s the photos of the finished job mate.
  4. Congratulations mate, keep us updated on how you get on in NZ.
  5. Bille, welcome aboard mate mate. Have you got any photos of your rangie in action to post in here.
  6. Thanks for that, I think I`ll go for the 255s, as its better to be safe than sorry, and the Disco does`nt really get used offroad, just touring and eating long distance miles in comfort, so the 255s may be better than the 265s for what we use it for. Thanks again.
  7. G`day all, has anyone fitted a set of 265/70/16s on a bog stock standard SII Disco, I don`t want to touch the suspension or trim anything, just fit em and forget em. And what about the spare on the rear door, will they clear the rear wiper without any problems. It is my misses Disco and I don`t want to mod it at all apart from changing the tyres, after a a couple of thousand KMs driving around Oman over the last week with 4 adults in it on some pretty rough dirt roads we had 2 Michilen XPCs fail, so its time to uprate the tyres, I would like to fit a set of 265/70/16 Cooper ATRs (or possibly BFG ATs) to give it a bit more clearance and a bit more agressive tread. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
  8. Sorry mate don`t know of one, you might be better off joining the LROC as with a dedicated club you might be limiting yourself with potential members as some members have mutiple vehicles, a tricked up defender with a freebie as a daily driver, with the LROC you will probably be in contact with all the potential owners. It also allows you to upgrade to a Disco or Defender later on if you want to and get involved in some of the more serious offroad trips.
  9. Streaky why Ireland mate, get onto WVA, they sell em. Let me know when your going to fit your tanks mate, if the in-laws have gone back and I`m free I`ll give you a lift.
  10. What are you trying to say mate, genuine one owner Land Rover, driven to church on Sundays(or the Mosque on Fridays in our case), never been offroad.
  11. Beach driving is not all that hard on vehicles at all, apart from the salt etc, a freebie should have no probs what so ever, deflate to 18psi or lower and you should fly along it.
  12. Thanks all, so with the concensous agreeing to it probably being a one off, I think it was probably due to a manufacturing defect or suffered a bit of damage, it has played on a few rocks since I`ve had it, so the shaft might have taken a bit of an impact somewher along the line. Streaky, thanks for the info on Trinity mate, I`ll try to get hold of em next week, if that fails, I`ll just bung in a new one. Thanks again all. And yes, I must agree, it was a pretty impressive effort.
  13. Les it should be origional with only about 65 000kms on it, so I doubt that is the problem. Yep it`ll make a nice garage ornament, some thing to talk about over a beer.
  14. G`day all, I had a bad prop day last week and here is the result, I have never seen one twist like this before. I am not sure how this can happen, I suspect there must have been a small dent or stress raiser in the shaft to let go like this, admitedly I was at 11psi with a rear locker, with a chipped TD5 at about peak torque, landing after hitting a small clump carp in 3rd low, the landing was quite hard, but onto soft sand, so the stress ahould not have been to high going back up the drive line as the rear wheels would have also spun in the sand to some degree and not grabbed perect traction. Talking to a freind out here who used to race a 4.6lt 110 has never snapped a prop shaft whist racing with a far more powerfull engine and subjecting his race car to more abuse than I could ever do. I have temporarily fitted an old V8 shaft to keep me on the road, but the V8 shaft is only about 2/3 the thickness of the TD5 one, so am a bit worried about damaging this one as well. My 1st thought was to just get another TD5 shaft and throw it in, but the question is after doing this once should I go for an up rated shaft or is this just a 1 off incident that wont happen again to a standard shaft. My other problem is getting an up rated shaft out here in Dubai, I am going to see if I can get a heavier duty tube fitted and balanced locally, but I doubt I am going to be able to get one made locally, so it means getting one shipped in from the UK which is probably going to be quite expensive. Any thoughts on idea on how it failed like this and if it could happen again would be greatly appreciated.
  15. After playing around with our Kelly Kettle trying to improve it, initially I put a heap of holes in the base to help it breath better, which worked OK, but the best thing you can do to help you Kettle on its way is get an empty dishwashing detergent bottle, fill it with diesel so you can give it a good squirt into the kettle to get it going, works a treat especially if your wood is a bit dampish.
  16. I had a quick look at a 2004 disco in OZ a couple of days ago with one on there, as I would`nt mind one for the front of our disco, and it was to big, it really does stuff up you clearance angles, if you want it for protection, it would be a good buy, but not so good for offroad use, as you would have clearance problems.
  17. Paul , glad to see your back in the land of the living mate, and a few pictures of your European-Middle East trip made the forum. I`ll have to pull my finger out and throw up a couple of other photo`s of the day out, but saddley, most of my picutres are of Jap or Yank trucks, not LRs. It was great to catch up with my fellow Australian Mod and take himself and his wife out for a day in the sand and share a couple of drinks afterwards. Its a shame I did`nt have a bit more time off to show him around some of the Wadi`s as well, but I guess we can do that next time around. As Paul mentioned most of the trips out here are with Jap vehicles or Jeeps, and as much as I hate to say it, some of them are very capable, as was one of the SWB Patrols which was out with us this time around. With a set of 35 inch BFG ATs on it, and a female driver who knew how to drive it, it took some stopping, but the sad part is she was a dedicated LR fan and still has a Tombraider 110 which she is trying to flog as it has turned into an unreliable money pit which has given her no end of grief.
  18. If your going onto sand, I would take the one with the biggest tyres, which is probably your 90, driving you 90 along the beach would also have to be a lot more fun than your Disco, so for me it would be an easy choice.
  19. Thanks all, it makes for some interesting reading, I think a big cooler is the go then, and I like the idea of the filter, will look into the a bit more, as it certainly can`t hurt to throw one in at the same time, and it will also increase the capacity a bit more. As Mark90 mentioned, gearing is`nt the problem, I need to keep the TD5 reving pretty hard in the sand, it sucks all the power you have and more on a decent climb in soft sand.
  20. G`day all, anyone fitted an oil cooler in their power steering return line. I`ve had a few ocassions where my oil has been very airated, I don`t think it has actually boiled as the fluid seems OK, I am thinking of fitting a small cooler in front of the radiator to see if it helps at all, I think the problem is more related to high RPM than actual heat, as my TD5 spends a bit of time on the limiter, sometimes it actually overflows and blows a bit of fluid out of the reservior, as well as a squeeling sound from the steering box. I am hoping with fitting a cooler the extra oil capacity may also help a bit. Anyone done anything similar and can shed some light on if it made any difference or not. Thanks
  21. That might be the only viable way of doing it, have one snatch block at the rear to run the cable forward, and let it spool straight out the back for rearwards use, that way you could maintain a decent angle from the back with the winch as far forward as possible.
  22. Heathrow is rated Cat 3B, so full autoland with most modern aircraft should not be now problem, the real problem is a lot of the crews and aircraft ar not maintained and trained for Cat 3 landings. Shame as it would fix a lot of problems, but as usual budgets constraints are part of the problem. After doing a few Cat 3 landings in an A330 and B777 simulator, you have to take your hat off to the pilots who have total faith and trust in the aircraft they are flying, as they only see the white line on the runway apprearing out of the fog, just before they touch down. Scary stuff, especially with a decent cross wind blowing them around.
  23. OK, thanks Richard, a snatch block leading onto the drum was an option for the front, but I had not considered it bunching in the centre. This is for general recovery, not challenges, so speed is not a consideration. John, bloody hell mate, that made my brain strain, thanks for the write up, very interesting, I had to re-read it to let it sink in, so the way I understand it then, is the optimum fleet angle is 2 degrees, so by angling the winch(don`t know if I have the clearance to do this) it would help get this angle, from the rear it would`nt be a problem, but the front would take a bit of thinking, maintaining a 2 degree angle would be quite hard as you could set this up to the middle of the drum, but by the time it got to either side of the drum, the angle would be way out, especially if you could only allow a couple of feet lead onto the drum out of the last hawse. So as I would be pulling from the lower part of the drum forwards and upper part rearwards(depending on which way the winch was mounted), with plasma this should`nt be a problem due to it not being directionally wound. Thanks for the write up.
