  1. You don`t see this very often.
  2. Jim x 2 thanks again for your info, I brought a new pump the other day and had a quick look at the pipe location with a tourch and mirror before I ripped it all apart and confirmed they had stuffed the centre 2 pipes and had the HP and LP pipes cross connected, it must have buggered the pump, so another new pump later and it is all running perfectly again. I tried to at least get a refund on the money I spend getting the first pump fitted but with our customer service attitude and lack of rights it was like bashing my head against a brick wall, but that was to be expected. At least it starts now, I was worried about getting stranded in the desert and not being able to restart it as it was before. Thanks again for your help and info.
  3. Thanks for the words of encouragement, I think I will be keeping my 110 for a while yet, at the end of this year they are introducing a new law out here which will basically put all vehicles over 15 years old off the road, which is a shame as if I did want to change vehicles there are only 2 other vehicles I would consider, a 80 series LC or the GU series Patrol, the 80 series are getting a bit long in the tooth so may not end up being any more reliable than what I have now and they will be banned from the road within the next couple of years, the Patrol with the 4.8lt petrol is very good(aprat from the fact it looks like a bucket of puss), on average they will use at least twice the fuel as my TD5 but at 20-25p/lt it is not a real issue, even over diesel at 60p/lt is very cheap compared to most other western world prices. Earlier this year I spend 2 weeks and 3500kms driving down the Omani coast road and back up through the centre, this is where the Defender really misses out, driving down the coast road it was fantastic with a desert crossing heaps of dirt roads etc, but hiking it back up the centre where we could have sat on 150kph for 1500kms in comfort would have been nice. Our enviroment out here with cheap petrol and high speed road driving make the jap vehicles very tempting, but when you do get offroad the Defender feels right at home. Out of interest the IFS TLC 100 series that everyone raves about is probably no stronger than a Defender when pushed hard, the engines are fine, gearboxes average and the independant front can give a lot of problems, and a front locker will regularly bust a front diff if pushed hard in reverse and the new 200 series is just to expensive to consider trashing in the desert so I dont know a lot about it. Jap parts are usually cheaper out here than LR parts, we dont not have access to all the cheaper LR spares that are available in the UK, where as there are a hell of a lot of Jap spares importers due to the popularity of the jap vehicles out here. Jim thats interesting about the exhaust manifold studs, I will use them next time I snap a stud. I have had a couple of big hits in the desert where I slammed into a couple of sand dunes, normally it ploughs on through and with steel bumpers and good clearance angles you normally get away with it, but I have bent the standard bumper on both side back into the wings, which in effect pushed the wings back quite a bit causing the flares to touch the front wheels, with a bit of remodeling with the high lift it is ready to go again in 1/2hr, the same hit in any other jap vehicle even with a decent bull bar would cause major front end damage, there is no doubt I would probably have to modify my driving style if I changed vehicles because the Defender can really take some abuse with the solid front axle and full chassis, its just the other components along the way that dont take it so well.
  4. Thanks Jim, a picture tells a thousand words, I am going to buy another pump tomorrow and now that I know how they are routed for sure I can see if they did stuff it up first time around or if I have another problem. Thanks again for the photo.
  5. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- G`day all, I over the last 7 years I have owned 4 different Land Rover, 3 110s including my current 2002 TD5 110 and my Wifes current 2004 V8 Disco. I never would have though I would consider throwing in the towl and going accross to the opposition, but the time has come now that I know when we replace our current vehicles they will not be replaced by another LR product. We own our current vehicles and are not in a hurry to replace them, our Disco has been very good with very little going wrong, admititdly it has only 62 000km`s on the clock and has seen very few miles offroad, up until now everything has been covered by warrenty but now the warrenty has expired. The only real problem we have had with it has been the TC/ABS under warrenty the ABS modulator valve and SLAB ECU were replaced. But by and large our Disco is by far the best vehicle we have owned and hopefully it will stay that way for quite a few years to come. The main reason I would`nt replace my Wifes vehicle with another Disco is depreciation, the Disco`s plumet in value compared to similar vehicles such as Prados which hold their value extremly well. My previous 110s a 1988 V8 and a 1990 200 TDI 110 were OK apart from a few gearbox changes etc, but given the age of them etc I was`nt to worried about a few things going wrong here and there. My current 110 a 2002 TD5 which had 40 000km`s on it when I purchased it 2 1/2 years ago now has 99k so by and large it is quite a new vehicle with less than 100ks on the clock. Compared to my earlier 110s it is a dream to drive, had been quite reliable and I was more than happy with it, but as of late my opinion is changing, it was first off due to the unusual situation of the price of diesel here in Dubai, which is still cheaper than what everyone else is paying in the real world, but is now 2.5 time the price of petrol and as of 1 month ago before the oil price started to come down was 3 times the price of petrol, so running our V8 Disco was and is quite a bit cheaper than running my TD5. So faced with the prospect of being able to run a bigger more powerful engined vehicle like a 4.5lt or V8 TLC or 4.8lt Nissan Patrol at less cost than running a TD5 110 I have started thiking about what I would replace my 110 with if anything happend to it. It also does not take a rocket scientist to look at the reliability of the other manufacturers compared to LR either, the TLCs are the pick of the buch when it comes to comfort but they are no where near as bullet proof as the Nissan Patrol which is a bit rougher in the body and cabin, very good off road, has twin fuel tanks, the 4.8lt engine is the most powerful thing on the market and can seat 4 or 5 in comfort which my 110 cannot. With a suspension lift a set of 285/75s or 305 tyres, factory rear diff lock they are very very good in the sand coupled with 160lts of fuel on board. My 110 for what it is, is just as good in the sand, I have to drive it very hard to get the best out of it, the TD5 has has a mild ECU remap, it has front and rear lockers and it spends a lot of its time on the limilter in 3rd low as I find this is the best climbing gear in the dunes, I would like to run a set of 285/75 tyres but am scarred of what will break next if I do so. One of my friends has 220ks on his 98 patrol and has not replaced one broken drive line component which is pretty impressive for the abuse he gives this thing. My 110 on the other hand has 99ks on it and from memory this is what I have replaced so far -clutch slave and master cylinders -2 pin front diff, due to carrier and pin wear leading to failure -twisted rear prop shaft -2 rear 1/2 shafts -3 exhaust manifold studs snapped -EGR valve lower pipe snapped off almost causing engine fire -baddly leaking transfer box to main box seal, transfer box needs to come out to fix it(next project) -fuel pump These are just the major things I can think of, there is probably something else I have missed, there have also been all the more minor things as well which have not been listed, brokem platic bits etc etc. I really hate to think of what my list will be up to if I still own the thing when it gets to 200ks on it. I still love driving my 110 and hate the thought of driving a Patrol but my head is starting to over rule my heart and if my 110 is written off in an accident or in the desert saddly I wont be buying another one, they are fantastic fun to drive and very capable but I am really getting sick or spending time underneath it after a trip to the desert and handing over my hard earned cash paying for new parts. But for the time being I know my tool box wont be made redundant for a some time to come, and our local LR stealer spare parts dept can keep smiling every time I come through the front door.
  6. Jim your a star mate, I obviously did`nt search my RAVE disc hard enough, I was just looking under fuel pump replacement. Thanks again, at the price of a new pump I feel much better about throwing a new one in now.
  7. G`day all, First time back here in a long time but my 110 has been fairly reliable up until late, now I have an ongoing fuel pump problem and 2 broken rear 1/2 shafts which I need to change this afternoon for my sins. I have had a bad run with fuel pumps, my first one died at approx 98km, the pump was screaming and the engine was hard to start, so being pushed for time I paid for a new one to be fitted(bad mistake), after fitment of the new pump and filter the starting still was`nt a lot better, but the screaming pump was at least gone, I put it down to a bit of air still in the system and thought I would drive it for a while and see how it goes, but after a couple of weeks it was still no better and the starting was getting worse, so I dropped the fuel tank down and had a look at the lines going into the pump to see if I can find any problems, it looked to me that the centre two lines had been cross connected, so I disconnected all the lines and tried to find what looked like the most logical way to run the lines from the set the rubber pipes had taken, I was sure that the centre two were wrong and swapped them over and put it all back together again. For the first day or so it started much better which was a bonus but now the pump is making a lot of noise again and it is hard to start so I think my new pump is now buggered. So before I throw another pump at it does anyone know the correct order the fuel lines go by colour code, I had a look at the RAVE disc and it just says to note the order of pipe location upon disconnection, which is now easier said than done, I am 99% sure I now have the correct location of the pipes into the pump but before I spend a lot more of my hard earned cash on a new pump I would like to somehow double check on the pipe locations before fitting a new pump. They colour code the pipe fittings but dont seem to put similar colour codes on the pump itself, which I found a bit strange. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
  8. Thanks Jim. Ralph, all`s well on the home front thanks mate, apart from the knackered sump plug.
  9. G`day all, has anyone got the part No`s for a TD5 sump plug and washer. Mines a wee bit rounded. Thanks all.
  10. Rick, what are they replacing it with, just the 3lt jobbie or is there a new engine coming out.
  11. When we leave Dubai I will be facing a similar delemer, as out here we can afford to own 2 decent 4x4s, but when we return to OZ we will only be able to have one, and it has to be able to do everything comfortably. My first choice will probably be a 100/105 series cruiser or Nissan Patrol, the bodies on the cruisers are much better than the Patrols, but the drive lines in the patrols are almost unbreakable. The cruisers out here in the desert regularly break if pushed hard, troubles with transmissions, front crown wheel & pinion with locker fitted and the independant front suspension. I have still yet to hear of any major problems with the patrols other than having a sluggish transmission, the only engine they offer with the patrols out here is a 4.8lt petrol so I don`t know of any of the issues associated with the diesels. For a budget vehicle the 80 series cruiser is fantastic value, so this would be my choice. Now that I have left the UK and am now in the minority being a LR owner, I can see a lot of reason for jumping ship, as much as I love LRs and think the defender is close to the ultimate std 4x4, but when it comes to the all round package the compatition has a lot to offer. One of the other big reasons is lack of dealer networks world wide for LR support, just about every small town in OZ and out here has a toyota dealer, which is good security when heading off the beaten track. LR offer very poor dealer networks in OZ away from the major cities, so this will be another factor in a decission of what to buy next. As mentioned previously in the thread the 75/78/70 series cruiser is very hard to beat for a more utilitarian 4x4, un-breakable drive line, but lacks the articulation and suspension comfort of a defender.
  12. Ruslan, thanks for the link, its greatly appreciated, it even has the Timken bearing numbers etc, pity I went and brought the lot before hand. I ended up getting LR bearing but had to get 1 Timken carrier bearing and it was about 1/2 the price of the LR bearing, same bearing number, just different box. Tony, could you add this link to the archive please mate.
  13. I just noticed on my TD5 that the front prop shaft is hitting on the bellhousing, the yoke of the prop shaft has marks on it and the casing is a bit mashed, I must admit I was a bit suprised by it. Tim great looking motor mate, will be interested to see how you find it after getting a few more miles on the clock. The 6 speed box is the big selling point for me, I wonder if you can bolt them up to a TD5.
  14. Thanks mate, that photo is perfect, it shows the hose going straight onto the the same fitting as I have, which is good, as it means I don`t have to pull the centre out later to change the fitting.
  15. Thanks Tony, I already have the RD56 sitting in my lounge room, the quote for building the centre up out here is about 80quid which does`nt sound to bad to me. I had a look at the D4x4 site and they have the HD hoses as well (here), and it seems they go straight onto the existing adaptor which is good, as I can take my time getting these bits and pieces later, and concerntrate on getting back on the road and get the locker up and running in the next month or so. I am heading back to OZ in about a month so I might even try to collect the hose and loom there.
  16. Thanks Steve, I will check out their website at work today, thanks for the offer to send them on, but if they have everything I might try to get them to Fedex them out to save a bit of time, as I need to get my 110 back on the road ASAP as it is my daily driver, and is now sitting in pieces. I don`t need the locking part up and running straight away but need to at least get the the diff back together. Thanks Tony, I`ll try to check out the links tonight.
  17. G`day all, my front diff finally let go yesterday after a play in the desert, so I went and got myself an ARB centre to replace the carp that LR fitted. My 110 only has 75 000kms on it, but I would like to replace both carrier and pinion bearings when they fit the ARB centre, I want to source all the parts myself instead of paying a premium by the crowd doing the job. Does any one have a list of all the numbers of the bearing and pinion seal etc, and if at all possible the Timken numbers for the bearings to save going to LR. I am paying for the centre to be built up and doing the rest myself, I tried to get a heavy duty hose to replace the STD ARB blue line, but had no luck getting one here, is it possible to fit it later or do you have to remove the centre again to fit a different fitting in the case. I am also going to fit an on-board air set up to actuate the locker, and got a 70-100psi pressure switch from ARB, but they did`nt have any looms apart from the ones that come with the compressors. Do ARB sell a loom by itself or do you have to make your own, I would prefer an origional ARB one so as to be able to use all the origional plugs. ARB here in the UAE are a bit of a battle, there is a fair language barrier and the staff have know idea of what they are selling apart form what is listed and mentioned in the catalouge. I had a look in the tech archive, but most of the links that come from Outerlimits seem to be dead. Thanks in advance.
  18. Out here in Dubai the jeeps are popular, but by all acounts they are as unreliable as the LRs if not worse. LR went as far as introducing a new engine/gearbox combo, why did`nt they go that little bit further and offer front and rear diff locks as well, it would have at least gave the competition something to think about. Out here the 100 series Cruiser rules the roost, but most of them never leave the road, the locals who really use their 4x4 usually ended up with a patrol, they are just so strong and reliable. As for the newer defenders its just a few die hards like myself and I am yet to see a RRS or D3 used in the desert in anger.
  19. Ali, I got a few real sheds through MOT in the UK as well, NSW has a pretty good system with their annual inspection, and if you have to put your vehicle over the pits they usually go through them pretty well.
  20. Ralph, I could get EPC to run on my old Windows 98 computer, but could never get it to run on my laptop with XP. Is yours running on XP or something older.
  21. Does any one have them, I know they are available for the older defenders, but I hav`nt seem them for the newer stuff only on Microcat. I have a lot of trouble with Microcat, and would prefer a straight PDF file loaded on our laptop. Anyone come across them.
  22. Interesting, thats why the thought of blowing over a grand for a ready made system is a bit OTT. If I can get someone out here to make me one locally at a decent price I think I`ll give it a go, to reduce the lag a wee bit would be a bonus.
  23. Very nice mate, but did it make any difference. I want to put a 3 inch system on mine when the time comes, there`s are a crowd up in Brisbane who sell stainless 3 inch exhusts with a nice free flow muffler, but the price ain`t real nice. $1350
