Metcal SP200 all day long.
Not cheap, but luvverly.
That looks nice. Little bit spendy for the occasional use.
My main gripe with my Velleman station is how far away the tip is from where you hold it - I'm way too shaky for that.

I guess an LT230 is a bit more sturdy, but I split my BW hitting a rock on a climb, and not even at silly speed. Very much looking into a skidplate now.
And wasn't it @Chris Daviesthat got a rock through his LT230 cover plate at Seven Sisters?

If you don't need the PDF version, the overhaul manual should be in the RRC/D1 RAVE (this is the old .exe version): http://rave.stringsandints.com/Discovery - Freelander - RR Classic.rar

I would agree that that does look like the head gasket has gone Especially if it isn't building pressure in the system while bubbling like that, it has to be going somewhere, and by the looks of that exhaust, it's into the combustion chamber.
A cracked block is certainly a possibility, especially if you don't know what the previous owner did to the poor thing. If the headgaskets were blown, and he did keep driving it while overheating, all bets are off.
But start with taking off the heads and looking for obvious leaks there.Did you follow the 14-bolt or the 10-bolt tightening sequence for the heads?

How much of said dirt is now clogging up your thermostat?

Very nice!

That would go for €2k+ over here

Quite the ordeal, but glad to hear you managed to get it working.
If you want to patch up your rad, I've had good luck with some high-temp 2-part epoxy before.

If you really want to verify the RPM reading, you can always try one of these: https://www.amazon.com/Digital-Photo-Laser-Tachometer-Contact/dp/B001N4QY66

Something UNC with a 9/16 head.

If they are the wrong pitch from the factory, could that maybe explain the premature failure?
At this point I'm wondering if new customers aren't better off buying a bunch of parts from the catalog and assembling it themselves with proper bearings and bolts.

Has your power steering gotten harder to operate since?
Sounds to me like the overpressure valve opening, although I've never heard of them failing tbh.

Only one page? Bl**dy amateur!
I have a large whiteboard in the garage full of jobs
I have a list in my phone
I have multiple notebooks
I have a wiki on my home server with a list of lists which includes reminders to look at the whiteboard/phone/notebook
And every time I go out to the garage I end up doing some other job that just cropped up instead
That sounds about right.

The GLE isn't too bad as 'the sensible option', is it. My LR salesman told me the new Defender sells realy well, much beter than they anticipated. The problem is getting them delivered, with all the shortages in the automotive industry. There are people waiting for a new Defender for a year now.
No, it isn't. And the PHEV with air suspension will tow 3500kg, which Land Rover haven't figured out yet. I poked them on Facebook a while back and asked what was up with that, and they said it had to to with the battery weight on the rear axle. Not sure how the Mercedes with a bigger battery doesn't have that problem, but hey...
-
You barely see any around here in Belgium. Makes sense too, too expensive for most people to own privately, and fiscally not interesting as a company car because LR dropped the ball with the PHEV. If they had gotten it under 50g CO²/100km, there would be a bunch of them running around. And I would have one on order instead of a GLE 350e.

I guess you could always try to build a TARDIS.

Or put all this, for that matter.

1) What is the gold coloured thing on the bulkhead, left in the pic, and...
2) the black thing with the rubber cap to the right. Is this one an impact sensor for airbag and/or fuel cut off?
1) Resistor for low-z injectors?
2) That's the inertia switch yes, fuel cut off in case of an accident.

Bit late to the party here, but interesting thread.
Having driven my RRC with both a BW with viscous coupling and an LT230, I'd go for the LT230 ATB in a heartbeat. Especially if you're doing snow and ice.

Helpful to know, John. I thought there was a lot of junk in those link addresses, but didn’t know to delete from the “?”.
Note that this doesn't always work Only if the website uses fancy human (and search engine) readable URLs. For example this thread's URL:
https://forums.lr4x4.com/topic/111449-something-for-us-all-to-remember/Would have been written as something like this:
https://forums.lr4x4.com/viewtopic.php?id=111449Obviously removing the ID there would make the page have no clue where to go. But these days, most of that sort of thing is indeed just tracking noise.

Do you think if he kept his foot in, it would have started its way up?
Probably. Going down the hill again on the way home may have been a bit sketchier though.

Ah, when sharing a wire I can see the logic. Thanks for the clarification, it didn't make much sense in my head that the body earth wouldn't be able to handle the extra draw
