  1. MODERATOR please can u approve me, been over 20 posts, I'll be good...ish Rain leaking through the windscreen killed mine but it fixed itself a week later If you disable the door-open switch as said like cutting wires then u will loose the light coming on when that doors open as I assume they use the same switch.
  2. I had a shogun fail at a real strict garage as the rear seats weren't there just the belts, most garages are ok with it though. Although the belts and seats aren't there I think They might still have a problem as the mounting area itself is a checkable place.
  3. Spoke to a few people in the know and as I understand it: I can reconnect battery and start car and the new airbags shouldn't go off, then I can see what lights stay on the dash so if I need to replace ECU and possibly 2 other sensors but they may have reset themselves so might get away just with having the ECU and bags checked at a LR dealer.
  4. forget specs: 97 300tdi Disco ES model
  5. Had a little crash in the snow which the front bumper took the brunt of nicely and both airbags were set off, Iv got replacement airbags same fittings/spec but what else needs to be done? Do the Actuators need replacing/resetting apparently there behind the headlights? Also do I go to a landy garage to test them? Any advice greatly appreciated
  6. Christ Iv only just spotted the remains of the 2a Thats such a tragedy! Hope he has a few more good mates like you to help him out!
  7. Sell as project so she will live on and all your hard work and effort won't be for nothing! Pics and details on here is a good place to start.
  8. Jeff-that link to www.weldinggases is the one I mentioned in my first post and thats even more for argoshield. I started off on Argo/20%Co2 and found it rubbish so I swapped to pure Co2 which I find pretty good, But after a chat to a gas supplier he suggested I try the Argo/5% Co2 mix as thats the one recommended for general car use and the 20% is for 6mm+ heavy work. So I'll try a disposable 5% first to see how it goes, But atm www.southwestgassupplies.co.uk seems the best Argo/5Co2 9Litre is £36 a refill with no delivery costs etc.
  9. I want to upgrade from little disposable bottles but BOC's cheapest monthly works out at £73 a yr just for the bottle so gas on top and extra charges like signing up etc. Online companies will send bottles out with a deposit of £50 on them which will be refunded when back(minus £10) so every new bottle costs about £76 to my door www.weldinggases.co.uk for Co2 So what do people on here do? Iv heard if your canny might be able to sort a pub bottle of Co2? And in the past fire extinguishers could be refilled etc, Or any Good places in Devon do refill bottles so save on the courier costs? Many thanks Duncan
  10. Hi John, yes fine for oil cooler pipes what everyone does when fitting to series
  11. Do the capillary type and the wire type both have the same thread? as my capillary water sensor is playing up so want to replace with the wire type.(much cheaper) Also Iv fitted a 200tdi which has no oil temp gauge so I'm going to get another sump plug and see if I can cut a thread to mount a series sensor into it, Only problem is there copper right? so Might not be that strong especially if theres not a good depth to cut a thread into... But can try on a spare plug! So what is the thread size? Many thanks Duncan
  12. Im 23 And Iv just got my modified lightweight with a 200tdi insured for just under a grand fully comp with footman and James, Which were the ONLY company to give me a quote out of the 9 big names I tried, Classic car policy. I Did unfortunately smash up my disco in December so that doesn't help But my 200tdi is totally reliable, maintenance free, and does 30mpg so over a year I save around £500 in fuel Pro's n cons
  13. I lined my hardtop with 4mm tabletop covering material stuck using spray adhesive but in the summer this melts and the lining sags but I do have a green/black camo roof. Have restuck with 'sticks like sh*t' from evostick I think, working so far but wait till summer...Does say its good for wet conditions and up to 100'C
  14. After sledging the Disco down a snowy hill into a defender I need to replace the Automatic transmission fluid cooler as it got " banana'd " and the pipes got bent and kinked, these pipes run the whole way to the gearbox so instead of replacing them can I just cut the kink out and use a small section of flexible oil line? my only concern is if the system is under much pressure? Cheers Duncan
  15. With any paint job preparation is the key, sanding down any flakey loose bits, etch primer any bare metal, cleaning the surface with the right thinners etc. I just got a HVLP and had a go aint to hard to do, and really good results.
  16. I like to keep windscreens galv on series as I just think it looks better, but if the galv is wearing thin and starting to rust then etch and paint, or can get re-galved
  17. I get my paint from 'The paintman' google him, nice guy and good prices can phone and ask lots of silly questions! I got a 2nd hand air comp so spraying my latest project And going mad on etch primer what great stuff I like matt with 30% gloss gives a slight shine but does help keep the rain n muck out.
  18. Brilliant stuff! being able to see what you're doing through lots of good photos is so helpful and encouraging for people planning similar things, Hope the jobs gone well and eagerly awaiting the next update!
  19. 4x4byV8 - PM waiting for ya. I saw a good condition defender lt77 sell nearby for £50! bargains can be had on the bay! The price of making an ashcroft stumpy+r380 is hard to justify as I don't think I'll really need the extra strength with what I want my vehicle to do, and can always upgrade later if it turns out I do! ToyRoverlander It's your truck that made me want LC80 axles! They no doubt are overkill for my Lightweight but do sort the tierod problem! And for all the effort of retro fitting to leafs would be great to gain lockers! If I can find any that is!
  20. I think everything runs 24v, Iv changed a lightweight from 24 to 12 with a new wiring loom, All bulbs were 24v even in the instrument panel!
  21. If I go with Disco axles then I'll buy and break a vehicle so can check for single brake lines, More important is the whole steering arm hitting the O/S leaf spring as I wouldn't be happy to raise the spring mounts as lowers the front end. Might look into RR axles a bit more as I think steering arm is higher. Thanks Snagger I finally understand the different lengths now! A defender lt77 might be the chosen unit as saves a few hundred quid on a 'stumpy' kit and to fit the kit you need to track down the right suffixed box. depends what I find around really.
  22. Good to know auto is the same length as manual and can position gear selector where I want as fly by wire i think? Defender gearboxes appear to be the ones to go for as the bellhousing is shorter I hear this is due to the 5th gear being somehow different? but is a defender lt77 or r380 the same overall length as a discovery one? obviously the defender transferbox is lower geared? Link to a defender lt77 for sale shows the short bellhousing and far forward gearstick. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/LAND-ROVER-DEFENDER-200-TDI-LT77-MANUEL-GEAR-BOX-COMP-/180554359603?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item2a09e0e333
  23. www.rockymountainspares.co.uk Also Chris perfect springs if you can find them, you get what you for with springs! Look a page back and theres a recent parabolics thread!
  24. Hi all I'm planning some Mods to my Lightweight and want to talk through some options! As she stands my lightweight is a 1975 s3 fitted with a 200tdi disco engine, parabolics with military shackles and pro-comps. Gearbox I'm planning on putting an r380 with an ashcroft short bellhousing on(to keep the gearlever as far forward as possible) behind the 200tdi (in standard series position if at all possible) or.. An auto-box as Iv just had both hips replaced so is honestly the wise choice but more work and less series parts. Are auto boxes the same length? Axles From cruising this site I'm now thinking about using Landcruiser 80 axles as reputedly strong, Disc brakes and Difflocks but Would this cause problems with MOT/V5 as not Landy parts? and whats the gearing ratio? also do they run single brake lines? or Disco 24 spline axles, easy and cheap to get by braking a vehicle, Disc brakes (I hear a 93 reg will fit 90 single line calipers?) built for a heavier vehicle so that much stronger at least. Also planning on fitting a roll hoop and rear bars that fits inside hardtop, New rear cross member possibly with a rear winch So any advice or thoughts muchly appreciated Cheers Duncan
  25. ToyRoverlander Thanks for explaining that I'm definately going to add an extra spring to the front set of paras! Just to throw another conversation piece out there anyone recommend a good paint for the top of para's? sad seeing rust take hold after just a few years
