  1. thanks for the replys guys. one quick query... should the bleed nipple be on the top or bottom if the slave cylinder when fitting it?
  2. Does anyone now the part number for the rear door lock seal. It fits between the door lock and the door on a defender 90 300tdi.Thanks, Josh
  3. cheers western. Thats basically what i did earlier, so thats re-assuring that i had the right idea. Would you advice to remove the front prop or doesnt that really help?
  4. Hi there, I have a 300tdi with an R380 gearbox and as you may already now, when replacing the clutch slave cylinder i didnt locate the pushrod into the clutch fork correctly. Well i have managed to recover the push rod thankfully out of the bell housing. My question is, what is the best way to relocate the pushrod into the clutch fork, as im having alot of difficulty? Would it be best removing the front prop or is there a quicker easier way? Also, the plastic peg that holds the push rod to the clutch fork, the pegs have broken off. Does anyone know the part number for this please? Many thanks in advance guys!
  5. Right ok, so its a case of pulling the slave out the bellhousing and checking the location of it all. What if its pushed to far into the bell housing?
  6. i didnt check it had lined up in the gearbox, so have i most likely pushed the piston and rod out of the slave. If so, what are the consequences?
  7. Just come to bleed again, and after pumping the clutch i heard a squelch noise and then clutch fluid was pouring out of the bell housing wading plug, what does this mean has the new slave given up?
  8. When i had replaced the master, i adjusted the pushrod so that the pedal height (not depressed) would be higher as is was so low. I Did that successfully and the pedal seems about the same height as before, but no mater what i do with the pedal height adjuster screw on the outside of the pedal box it doesnt do anything to the pedal height when depressed. The pedal just boots to the floor under tension (from the spring i beleive) and then it has to be pulled back up manually. Therefore making it extremely difficult to bleed as it has to be pressed down and then pulled back up. Anybody got any ideas please?
  9. thanks western, i was following the haynes manual for the clutch pedal adjustment. In that case then, i have neccessarily done anything wrong its just a matter of clutch pedal adjustment. Have you got any good methods of bleeding too?
  10. Hi folks, this afternoon i went ahead and replaced the clutch master & slave cylinder on my 300tdi 90 1997. Now that i have come to bleed the clutch, after they were bothed replace i have found the clutch pedal to be sticking down and not returning like normal and it has to be lifted back up by me. Can anybody help me please as i have no idea what i have done wrong??
  11. I havent checked to be honest. But the amount that is in my footwell wouldnt be noticable in the master cylinder. But as you say, should check just incase its leaking elsewhere.
  12. Thanks for the rapid reply fellas thats great. Would this be why i get notchy gears at times would you say?
  13. Hi there, just got into my 300tdi 90 and noticed a couple of drops of oil under the clutch pedal. Ive heard that this could be the clutch master cylinder, am i correct? Also, is this amount of oil worth worrying about? Thanks in advance guys, Josh
  14. Hi folks, right im a bit of a novice when it comes to wiring and gauges etc so please forgive me. Ive done a search and found alot of results but am still uncertain for my engine/vehicles. My plan is to fit engine oil pressure, oil temperature and volt meter gauges to my 300tdi. Firstly can i use vdo gauges out of old VW cars for example? How do i go about the engine oil pressure and temperature... I beleive something has to fitted between the air filter or something like that, which has two senders, one for pressure and the other for temperature. Is this correct? Also, i have a split charge system and what to read the volts of the two batterys. Can this be done via a carling switch and be switched either way, one or the other. Many thanks guys, Josh
  15. Thanks for the reply Les. Surely the master cylinder cant give up this early. Its been on 6 months or less and about 500 miles. Its genuine LUCAS! To be honest, i cant tell where the hissing is coming from, as ive pritty much done what you said. Although, it can be heard in the footwell...Is it time for a new servo? or am i better getting it checked out by someone, as ive pritty much replaced the whole bloody brake system
  16. Thanks for the reply chaps. Looks like i should try a new servo then. As i have checked the non-return valve and can only blow into it the one way. I dont think the pipe is leaking, as i have felt along it and i cant feel any suction even when my finger is over the end. The hissing when the engine is running can be heard in the engine bay as well as the footwell. Josh
  17. Hi there, yet again the brakes on my 300tdi defender 1997 have come to my attention as they are poor. The reason its come to mind is i had to do an emergency stop the other day and only just missed the other driver as it takes so long to stop. When i do an emergency stop i cant lock the wheels no matter how hard i try, and the force i am applying onto the peddle is alot, im nearly of the seat! They are just not up to scratch when braking hard. I have checked the brake vacuum pump for suction where it attatches to the servo and its sucking a fair amount to feel it on my thumb. Whern the engine is started, the pedal does sink, so does this mean that the servo is working? As soon as i turn the engine off i loose total servo assistance instantly... Whereas i thought the vacuum is maintained for atleast 10 mins?(correct me if im wrong). Another thing i have noticed, is a hissing noise when the brake pedal is depressed and when the engine is turned off after it being running you can hear air escaping from somewhere when the pedal is depressed. I have checked for cracks in the servo and i cant seem to see any and ive also checked the seal between the master cylinder and servo and that seems fine. 6 months ago the defender had a new master cylinder but there are bubbles coming up out of the reservoir when the pedal is depressed (is this normal then). Its also had new brake pipes all round including flexis, new brake pads and i rebuilt the rear brake calipers. The system has been bled that many times that it cant be any cleaner;) .... (but that was a previous brake problem that is now sorted) Any help would be greatly appreciated folks, thanks in advance
  18. Hi there, Ive noticed that when the engine is running on my 300tdi and i press the brake pedal i can hear a hissing noise. There is deffinately no air in the brake system, it has a new master cylinder, new brake pipes and flexis, new fluid and rebuilt rear calipers. Could anybody give me any ideas and is there a problem? Many thanks
  19. Does anyone now where i can find a decent alternative to genuine door seals?? Ive tried Sh*tpart and they didnt even allow for my doors to close properly, therefor leaving about a 10mm gap between the seal and the door - I could actually see inside the cab when the door was shut, they were that bad!! Do bearmach sell door seals, as i havent been able to find any on the net?
  20. Cheers western, so all need to do is remove that.. Fit the T peice and then screw the old sender and new sender for the gauge into the T peice. Sounds good to me! Thanks alot:)
  21. Does anyone know where i can find the sender connected to the engine, is it by the oil filter by any chance?
  22. Cheers liam for the reply, thats fantanstic exactly what i wanted to know.
  23. Hi folks, m looking into fitting an oil pressure gauge to my mud console. How do i go about doing it as regards to wireing it up as well as the oil pressure light. It will be electric gauge also, not mechanical... Something like a durite gauge maybe. Ive done a search nothing has really come up for a 300tdi, and to be honest i have no idea. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Can anyone recommed a gauge that should be in a land rover (I know its personal preference but still)... So far im using a volt meter and oil pressure gauge any one got an ideas. (land rover is pretty standard) Many thanks in advance, Josh
  24. Hi folks, I hear a hiss when i press my pedal down when the engine is running, and can also hear a constant hissing when the engine is running and im listening around the servo area. Any ideas, and could it be related?
