  1. Thanks folks, i will have a look at that. I have a new windscreen seal and the roof has been of before and been resealed and thats not leaking. So ill have a look at the manual. The joys of a land rover
  2. Hi folks, I have a large amount of water leaking in to my footwells. When i lifted my driver side mat to clean yesterday i found a big puddle of water under it. Under further inspection i lifted the mat that fits onto the bulkhead behind the foot pedals and found loads of water sqeezing out of it. Both footwells display the same puddles under and ontop of the mats. I cant seem to track it down to be honest. The windscreen isnt leaking in and im pritty sure the bulkhead flaps arent either. Its a 300tdi 90, can anyone help me?
  3. IIRC there is a wire that pushes onto the top of the transfer box as well as the reverse light switch that often comes loose which in turn stops your light on your dash working. Thats what happened to me with my 300tdi 90. I found the wire by removing the centre seat box tray, its a bit fiddly to push the wire back on to the pegs but it can be done. Someone correct me if this is wrong, but im sure thats what i did.
  4. Yeah i might give that a go. Should i try ATF do you think (as its cheaper), as its apparently thinner so would it be better when the gearbox is cold.
  5. Yeah did an oil change about 500 miles ago and changed to mtf94. Allthough i hadnt drove it before i changed to mtf so dont know weather it had a postive effect.
  6. Thanks western. So ive removed the EGR but can i remove that valve also, as it looks like its connected to the brake servo and air intake pipe. Or am i better leaving it and just sealing the air intake pipe. Thanks again.
  7. Its the R380 in a 300tdi with 120 000 miles mate
  8. Has anyone tried the lucus gear oil stabiliser in their defender gearbox. As i am struggling to get second gear when its cold and it allready has MTF94 so i though i might give this a go... http://www.lucasoil.co.uk/products.php?page=products&subpage=product&product=12
  9. Heres the electronic device on the bulkhead http://s905.photobucket.com/albums/ac253/souster4/?action=view&current=DSC_0166.jpg#!oZZ1QQcurrentZZhttp%3A%2F%2Fs905.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fac253%2Fsouster4%2F%3Faction%3Dview%26current%3DDSC_0166.jpg%26 And the wire: http://s905.photobucket.com/albums/ac253/souster4/?action=view&current=DSC_0166.jpg#!oZZ2QQcurrentZZhttp%3A%2F%2Fs905.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fac253%2Fsouster4%2F%3Faction%3Dview%26current%3DDSC_0164.jpg%26
  10. hi folks, ive just fitted a safari snorkel for my 300tdi and made sure its all sealed by covering the snorkel top and making the engine stall. WHich worked perfectly thanks to the tech archive on here. But, ive come across a wire going and its on the induction pipe air box to the turbo. The wire goes to an electronic device which is mounted on the bulkhead and appears to have an egr breather from what im aware attatched to it. So what is this wire and electronic device.. and it it ok to disconnect it and find away of sealing it up?? Many thanks josh
  11. Thanks western. I was just going to extend it as a precaution really. Im not really going to wade much deaper than standard, so it should be ok then. How important is the timing case breather, as i have done everything else
  12. Hi, does any one know where the fuel tank breather is on a 300tdi. Is it the pipe that joins onto the fuel filler neck? Ive heard that extended fuel tank breathers are used for wading. But, if it joins onto the filler neck wouldnt the tank fill with water anyway if the cap is not sealed?
  13. Hi folks, I woundered if you guys could help me out, as i am still stumped after all the research i have put in. Im looking into doing strata florida for the first time in the next month or so, and allthough i would love to tag along in some of the forum members laning trips/weekends with work commitments i cant book a date off. My question is, i have an OS map of the area and know roughly where the green lane is (allthough ive never been there) but i want to find out the exact grid references of the lane in order to firstly, understand where i am going and secondly to contact the council/glass to see if the lanes are suitable for me to drive. Ive tried to look for the BOAT signs on the OS map but i cant seem to find any. Ive also had a look on trailwise which has given me a rough idea, but nothing deffinate which is what i need. Im from wolverhampton, west midlands and I wont be alone, ill be with a mate and we will be both in standard 300tdi defenders other than safari snorkels. I dont want to be travelling all that distance to find out im not ment to be there (wrong lane) etc. I also understand, that people like to keep green lanes quite secret in order to protect them from idiots abusing the land and wrecking it for other people. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks, Josh
  14. Haha.. To be honest, it seems to loud to be anything stupid like something tapping such as battery leads under bulkhead or a bullet connector in the dash etc. If your sitting in the passenger seat it can be felt quite badly when it occurs and i dont think its vibration of the floor panels as it can be felt through the landy. I cant feel any movement in the exhaust, but if it was wouldnt it happen all the time? Could it be a cv joint, or would the vibration have to be constant for it to be that? Thanks for your help
  15. Exhaust brackets are fine, cant move the exhaust about to make a tapping noise. Have just tied up battery cable to starter motor! It sounds like the inner wing is vibrating, but i have checked that for vibrations and i cant make it move and nothing seems to be tapping on it. Is it something mechanical do you think? Or is it a matter of finding a petty vibration?
  16. Thanks for the quick reply. Just had a look at the floor panel, and its pritty solid, the bolts/ captive nuts are rusted in
  17. Hi there, I have a strange noise on my 300tdi 90 coming from under the passenger side footwell. Its like a tapping vibration noise that only occurs at lower speeds in a higher gear.. When im labouring it slightly i spose. The noise doesnt occur when the engine is revving quite high what ever the speed really. Has anybody got any ideas because i dont really know where to look. Ive checked and greased my propshafts and all looks ok there! One thing i have noticed is the front passenger side wheel bearing is constantly coming loose, so i took the play out of the wheel bearing twice now and the noise is still there. Im going to change the wheel bearing asap but thought if i need to strip down any further i might as well do it all at once. Hense my reason for asking on here.
  18. Hi there, I recently took out my wading plugs after doing bala 4x4 last sunday in a standard 90. I was shocked when a cup full of water came out of my bell housing wading plug. I thought the wading plug should have prevented water getting in here.. so could it of get in somewhere else?? Will this have done any damage to the internals, as i have never had water come out of there before and Is there any precautions i need to make before wading in the future. After all it was below 500mm!! Many thanks, Josh
  19. Hi folks, I have a bit of a problem with my 300tdi starting which has 120,000 on the clock... Sometimes when i turn the key, it sounds like the starter motor doesnt engage and it doesnt turn the engine over (sounds like the starter motor is just spinning freely and not cranking) . But if i turn the key back and try again it starts absolutly fine. The problem is now getting worse, and dont wont to become stuck not being able to start it. Have you lot got any ideas please??
  20. Thanks for the help!! The indicator stalk has a bit of play, but the other side is fine. The stalk that is broken, can be pushed into the steering column about 1cm and the same with being pulled out. The only way i can switch the lights on and off is pull the stalk out from the steering column. So it looks like im best to strip it down and have a look. Thanks folks.
  21. Hi, Just got in my landy to test my lights work etc. and found the light stalk seemed to have loads of play in it. So much so that you have to pull the stalk outwards (towards the passenger side) in order to switch the side lights/dipped lights on and off. Has something just come loose or is it badly worn due wear. The reason i ask, i passed my test today, and hope to get on the road tomorow. I really dont fancy stipping it down (not really knowing what to look for).. make things worse then have nothing to drive! Thanks in advance.
  22. Hi, I drained my gearbox oil today in my 300tdi with 120,000 miles on the clock only to find that the drain plug was loaded with metal particles and filings. Looking at it... Would you say the oil has never been changed in the box and it was well due, or is this common in these gearboxes. Allthough, i have never changed gearbox oil before but this seems quite bad and could cause damage. The oil looked very metalic also. Thanks for the help.. Drain plug particles
  23. Hi folks, Im having a bit of trouble and im a bit confused. Im in the process of replacing my drop arm ball joint. Ive now come to a halt as i cant get the top cup (i believe) to come out. Which way should it be extracted?? Ive followed the process in the tech archive on this forum... but mine seems to look different from others ive seen. Its a 300tdi defender. I am led to believe that it should be pushed downwards out of the drop arm, but i cant see how this would happen with the lip that is around the top of the cup. Heres a pic.. Thanks in advance Top cup
  24. Hi folks, Recently for the last 350 miles ive been running my 300tdi 90 on morris magnol 15w/40 mineral oil. Service specifications: API CF-4 / CF / CD, CCMC D4 / PD-2 Is this oil high enough quality or acceptable for my engine, as the service specifications arent meeting the ACEA standards. Ive also noticed that the oil isnt really changing colour, its still fairly yellow at 350 miles, which i found to be un usual. Would some body mind shedding some light on this, or am i just being stupid?? Also, if i was to change to a better oil, maybe and semi synthetic.. Do i just change the oil as normal? and would i have to change the filter (its only done 350 miles)?? Thanks in advance.
  25. Hi, The last few days i have noticed a rubbing/friction noise from my 300tdi 90. Its not consistant, it only seems to be every half of a rotoation that it makes this noise. It sounds like its coming from under the cubby box. When the inspection cover is moved from under the cubby box it sounds like the handbrake is rubbing (A bit like a warped/bent disc sounds like rubbing on the pads). When pulling off you can really feel this friction on the engine too. The land rover hasnt been driven for a while. Any ideas what this could be??? surely not handbrake adjustment as its not consistant dragging/rubbing
