  1. Bit of a basic question, but what is meant by the term "backlash"? It has been used in a number of threads recently, but I am not fully clear what it is. Can somebody please explain to me what it is, and what the symptoms are please. Cheers
  2. Expedition unit...... there is a bench seat and kitchen in the back of the Landrover.... and a bed in the trailer..... and a wooden roofrack with a generator in place for everything else. Where do you put your gear for the long term expedition? I don't get it. Martin
  3. I am using an outfit called Laser Motor Services at Ranmore Manor, between Dorking and East Horsley/Effingham (01483 283295). He came recommended by another local mechanic who has a lovely 90, but I cannot at this time comment on what he will do for me. As I said I will pop up some pictures of his work when it has been done.
  4. I have now bought the DBS rear cross member from Devon 4x4. I will post some pictures once I have had it fitted so that others can see what it is like. It is being couriered direct to the chap who is fitting it for me so I will not see it unfitted. Cheers Martin
  5. Yup it was the tall man with the beard at the end of the M1 bit. Just rechecked - Chris I believe you are right. I will go away again. Martin
  6. On the last Top Gear (E-type 50th Anniversary) , I thought I spotted a forum face towering over the rest. SimonR was that you in the audience?
  7. Agreed. Just got one and if you include getting the torx screwdriver out and putting away again it took 5 minutes to fit. Quick delivery too. Thank you Simon! Just got to get round to fixing the leak into the footwell from under the windscreen now!
  8. Finally found one that seems to be recommended by several respected suppliers. I cold not get through to the company who Richards recommended, but found them at Devon 4x4, from where I intend to buy my replacement. The DBS item is more expensive that some of the others, but comes complete with all of the gubbins (hangers etc) that would have to be put back. It also comes with chassis extensions which will make the welders job easier and provides more strength if the chassis turns out to be a bit sus, It is also said to be a bit stronger that the usual tin foil, but not as strong as Devon's HD rear X member. Devon also do a cheaper Britpart item. Can't claim to have found it on my own. Thanks to SimonR for the heads up on Devon 4x4. HTH others. Martin
  9. Just above the encouraging bit you posted is another damning entry: B*******r
  10. NFU quote 85% increase in last year's premium - and will not reduce Admiral Multicar 5% decrease on last year's premium.... I wonder which I am likely to go with........
  11. Bizzare message received today! Looks like it will be easier to get it reclassified as an estate car with DVLA after all. Martin
  12. Controlled explosion.....then towed away..... not covered by insurance... They have it covered!
  13. Just remember that the powder from powder extinguishers is highly corrosive, and will tend to take out any electrics/electronics. Engines will need a fast and thorough clean, including the insides which may pick up the corrosive powder from the inlet and plaster it all around the innards. Better that loosing the whole truck, but still not great..
  14. It is the same as if you were using a van for private transport, as the van is a considered a commercial vehicle it come under the LEZ regardless of whether it is used as a commercial vehicle or not. It is never a good idea to confuse common sense and legislation !!
  15. it is down as a diesel car, but also as light 4x4 utility rather than estate. Whey are making such a mess of is separating the landrovers made primarily for the carriage of passengers (ie CSW) from those made primarily to carry cargo (ie commercial). Hence why I think they wanted pictures from four sides of my Defender. You can see the windows and seats and as such they should (hopefully be happier about it as a "car". Fingers crossed this time. Martin
  16. Just had an interesting email from TFL asking for photos of my Defender as part of the "validation" process they are undertaking. There may be hope yet (for CSW owners at least)!
  17. crclifford posted a link to the thread where I asked the same question for my 90. There were a few suggestions of people to try, but no-one with experience of what works in practice, what is made from cheese and what is worth shelling out for. Looks like we are on our own! Martin
  18. Anyone got any experience of the John Craddock one?
  19. The good news Nige, is you are getting faster at..... Getting to the hospital.
  20. Cheers for that slomofo. I will ring them. I did have a look at their website - lots of winch bumpers and pre-td5 stuff but they did not appear to have a TD5 rear x-member on the website so I was looking elsewhere. Cheers for the heads up.
  21. Agreed, these selfish idiots will have it closed for all of us.
  22. No one with a view on whether extensions are needed or not for TD5 rear x-member replacement?
  23. I have done a search both with the new improved forum search and a google site search to no avail. I have contacted Richards and found that they don't do just rear x-members. They have pointed me to BDS Metal Services who do apparently make them (have not yet answered the phone though!). My biggest question relates to the extensions for the chassis rails - I know that the genuine one come without - is there something about the TD5 that means that the extensions are not generally fitted or have I just not found one that has legs. The questions were asked as all fitting advice and x-member advice that I found was specifically for Pre-TD5 vehicles - in fact the 90 fitting guide in the tech archive does refer to TD5 x-members as being made of baked bean tins - that is unfair on the tins! Cheers guys Martin
  24. The time has come for the rear x-member of my defender 90 to be changed. It is a 51 plate 2002 model. I have noticed that the replacement TD5 x member from Paddocks does not come with legs. Is this normal? A question to those who have done it : where did you get it and what is the opinion on quality and fit? Are they made of something stronger than the original cheese? Cheers Martin
