    Could you explain a bit about the class you are entering? Adventure TR2 you mentioned in our facebook chat. What regulations does your car need to comply to? We competed in TR2 in 2009, which was at the time 36" tyres max, modified production cars.

    We had a great time doing the event and had a decent result also. I must admit, contrary to what was said above, I have no intention of going there again. These events really take over your normal life, which I cannot have anymore.

    It was double income, no kids back then, it is single income 2 kids now!

    That said, if you haven't done it, my advice is do it, you won't regret the experience.

  2. I used to fill up at my local Calor gas station when I just arrived in the UK. This meant only filling up during normal office hours.

    Availabilty was one of the main reasons for me to convert to diesel.

    Maybe you can use replacable Calor gas bottles for forklifts?

  3. There are all kind of reasons why this is the case, and Tax may be the main reason. I know that in Holland everything car related is way more expensive than it is over here. The pricing policies of car manufacturers is even more weird; I mean the price of a landrover registered on the road is about 200% that of it leaving the factory. As a result of this, Land rover lowers the price pre-tax, so the on the road price doesn't get so ridiculous. This were the return import of cars comes from; you ship a RHD to holland, than ship it back to the UK and sell it cheaper. 

    I can imagine parts having similar issues. This thing really frustrates me, because is this why we have the EU? It should not matter were we buy it,as we should be in the same europe? Big hordes of dutch people go filling up the car in Germany cause it is cheaper, so now the country has variable duty rates on fuel, so the fuel stations near the borders don't go out of business. It is just bend as you like. 

    Just hope leaving the EU won't hurt the economy of the UK too much.

  4. As mentioned before, you need to ask yourself what you really need. On 7.50 tyres, the rear axle is as bombproof as it gets (I assume a salibury axle). The front, you might want to consider HD shafts and CV's and a 4 pin diff so nothing breaks. Certainly, if you consider diffs, the Detroit setup will alter handling, as will any limited slip diff, so selectable would be better with your uses.

    Winches, well if you like travel light, than don't bother, as you carry something wherever you go, and might need it only once.

  5. Stunning video; Scotland should employ you to promote the country! I fancy going myself now. As a question, how much feasible is doing what you did in a usual Eurobox style car? I can entertain the idea of going with my family, but using the landy isn't really going to work I think. We would use local accommodation, rather than sleeping in the car. We are also limited to school holidays, which would make the before mentioned traffic problem worse.

    Not sure I see the point of a much thicker/stronger aloominum body for a LR... surely the point is the body doesn't need to be strong?

    And aluminium bulkheads. I think it is a great product they have there. It is heavy though.

    So they copied that as well. I think they have done a great job taking the best from other offroaders and create a good all purpose vehicle. It is, after all the spritual replacement of the defender. The fact that they could buy an existing facility in France means it is probably the difference between profitable and making a loss. I certainly hope it will succeed.

  9. I am aiming for a jeep that looks cool and is nice to drive, and can keep up with traffic on a motorway basically. The end result won't get any of the rivet counter crowd excited, but i specifically did not cut up any original WW2 parts, as it is just not the right thing to do. As you can see, there is so much other stuff you can use and achieve almost the same result. It also can be very cheap this way if you play your cards right. I have spent 2k so far and I have all the parts to build a working car.

    The boys are trying it for size:

    It is a Toyota steering wheel and column. This was included in the sale, together with a toyota steering box. It is the horendous box in front of grille arrangement, and is, together with the steering wheel, going to the only right place for it; the scrap bin.

    I have a plan for the new steering wheel.

  11. An update, long overdue. There is 0 progress to speak of, due to me trying to get the landrover back on the road. But The project is far from dead, and I am keen to continue, once the landy is running again.

    Instead of doing work I went shopping: Check out this little Gem:

    I found it on Ebay, from a chap who imported a car from Thailand in 2006; He realised the body was not the same year as the chassis, and decided to get a matching WW2 body for it and sell this body. It is basically an M38 Jeep body (50s military Willys jeep as used during the Vietnam and Korea wars). So not quite WW2, but military all the same. It is in mint condition, has a neat paint job done on it (little patina, which i like. What's more, it is Right hand drive. All of this is not for the purist, but perfect for me, and was less than half the price of a new body. So I picked it up and dropped it on the Mahindra chassis. It is a close fit (not quite the direct bolt on I was expecting), One body mount needs to move on the chassis, and the front shock mount clashes (but is in the right place) with a bit of work it should go on there very well.

  12. I'd say get a good 300, it will easily earn itself back. A 200 is easier to fit to your car though, so that might be a consideration as well. It is a shame LPG never took off here, as it makes a lot of sense to use it, rather than burn it off at the refinery. One other route to consider is to get Calor gas bottles delivered to your home, and swap out the tank when it is empty, and get them refilled. This is what users of Forklift trucks are doing; not sure of the legality of this is on the road, but worth considering.
