  1. you would be lucky to insure any defender for less than £200 if your not 65 years plus. Lancaster got me a good deal, fully comp on and off road (the works plue EU cover) £252 plus covers my sIII doors at no extra cost. they cover most genuine 'LR MODS' like your snorkle
  2. Agreed 80w/90 is more than fine in the uk climate dont get halfords own. Get down to a trade store and get some Mobil hd http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/MotorOil/Other_Products/Mobilube_HD_Plus_80W-90.aspx you will be suprised at the difference!
  3. neonovice your the man! I will be having a look at that DSE the first chance i get. Do Range Rovers of this spec and price come up often? Also im a large scale service engineer so even older ones are more a project than a pain. Just coming to the end of my current project (1988 defender) so looking to 'upgrade' and not to a disco!!

  7. Its always hard for me to part with cash but my sealy auto welding helmet was around £80 but worth every penny. And some of the tools i have in my box that im always glad to have are: Jubilee clip flexi driver http://www.diytools.co.uk/jubilee-clip-driver-flexible.html?utm_source=Google-Product-Search&utm_medium=Organic-Feed&utm_campaign=Google-Product-Search&gclid=CIv33bHD57MCFSbMtAod0EcA8A saves so many bleeding hands!!!! And this bad boy http://www.toolmanyardley.co.uk/product.aspx?productid=871 I know its a sin to use a shifter but its the best i have ever used. 9. just got 90 back from MOT been told i need to replace P gasket as a small leak is developing What is the item No for a 300Tdi P gasket??
  10. Everything is air tight and clean externally. Next chance I get I will be stripping the lot and seeing if there is a blockage internally as this seams the only logical answer!
  11. Must be in the heater matrix then. Will take it out and have a look. is there a thermostat for the heater or is it just looped in the system?
  12. Let me just clear this up think. I didn't quiet make myself clear. I have a 300 tdi In mine with a x-fan unit and new rad. Last night I sat with the engine just over idle for an hour and with the (caterpillar) glycol it hardly raised the running temp above normal. Therefore the fan never kicks in So the problem I'm having is the cab never gets above tepid inside. The old td I used to have in the 90 used to run hotter and give that extra heating for the cab. Is there anyway I can forced the engine to run a little warmer without damaging it. Or some way of getting a better heat flow to the fan?
  13. What is the minimum mix for coolent and water in a 300 tdi. Currently have 50/50 glycol mix (thanks to work for providing) and the engine NEVER gets over heated. But with winter closing fast I'm considering upping the temp to avoid freezing. Or is it just worth getting a rad cover and leaving the glycol for now.
  14. Might have fudged my wiper motor mechanism today. May have lost my temper with it and tried twisting it the wrong way. Anyone ever taken one to bits to fix? Just looked at a replacement and £165 is steep for a tiny motor (Part no. STC3854) Or does anyone have a cheap one going in there shed?
  15. right is there any other option other than part no:STC3854 as a replacement for a defender rear wiper? I dont really want to spend over the odds for a little motor
  16. Looking for a low cost ,hard wearing material for both flooring and roof lining. I would really like something with some sound insulation also. Anyone know of a company that sells what im looking for or know of any alternatives.
  17. Check for air in the fuel pump system. Or breaks in the fuel lines.
  18. I recently bought a 90 the same age and close to same miles on a 2.5td. Started and ran fine when i got it with a bit off a smokey start so new plugs service etc etc. Few months and 2000 miles later started spitting oil from the back too so new turbo which i still have if your interested? Didnt help much so called it a day on the 2.5td. Bought it to do engine swap anyway. (Now have 300tdi in her) The rest of the 90 was in great condition for age, inside and out look less than 10 years old (chassis hardly 5) and slowly im making it look better than new. so far costing around £3500 Bit of a labour of love but worth it!! All depends on how much money time and skills you have.
  19. always having silly faults on mine and its normally down to a bad earth. Its worth checking.
