  1. Now that is what I hadn't thought about, I knew there may be corrosion, but I didn't think It could get that bad to be honest. So when looking at £300 for a new set of carbs (well tbh after all that work they would be "new"), thats not bad tbh. Its a shame that the turnaround is 4 months, as if it wasn't so long then this decision would be a LOT easier.
  2. I'll see what my mate uses in his parts washer. Yeah I know carb cleaner, but wanted something I could leave them soak in for a few hours or a day or two. Oh is there? I'll deffo b getting that then!!
  3. What is the best thing to soak the parts in, to degrease and remove all the old fuel. So clean them up a bit. I may well chicken out, but worth me getting all the information in advance I suppose lol. Invaluable help here. http://sucarb.co.uk/technical-carburetters
  4. Just been emailed by Burlen www.sucarb.co.uk Price for both to be restored £220+vat. BUT there is a 16 week turn around But for all the bits; 1 x Rebuild Kit Full set of gaskets and seals for both. main Jets, needle valves, seats for the bowl floats, spindles and bushes, throttle disks, and screws. 2 x 100in Jet needle. 2 x Yellow springs 2 x HIF Float kits. 2 x Damper assemblies That lot comes to £144.66 inc Vat. So hmmmmmmmmm, looks like I'm gonna have to develop a taste for very fiddly jigsaw puzzles.
  5. Thats true, but would involve getting my Land Rover on the road lol. Plus I need one or two things for the overdrive.
  6. What diffs are 4.1?? I will probably not fit the OverDrive until I have some 4.7 diffs, and then fit the overdrive. I'll see what it is like with the disco diffs, then I can always fit the series diffs.
  7. Have emailed them, cheers. Also Gower Lee, and Burlen (Su Carbs.co.uk)
  8. Hi guys, apart from doing it myself, are there any reputable companies you may have used to restore/rebuild/overhaul twin SU's?? I can do a Google search with the best of them, but after somewhere that you have personal experience with. As lets be honest and advert saying what they can do, and a personal recommendation from a customer is another thing. My SU's work, but have a leak, and could do with a damn good service. I wouldn't know where to start, so getting them done by a pro would just need them fitting and then setup.
  9. These are mine old school Chicago Pneumatic. CP734 - 1/2" Torque rating 576Nm (425ft.lbs) CP772 - 3/4" Torque rating 1356Nm (1000.lbs) An air chisel/hammer, and an air drill. My spray stuff and die grinders live in a different drawer. The air compressor I run now is a SIP jobbie 14CFM and tbh I'm yet to have it struggle. I did have an Atlas Copco TE22E but the conrod seized due to the oil screw on the pump getting broken.
  10. Thanks for that I must have overlooked those when I was looking at their transfer case sump cover. Interesting. I am going to buy one of their bottle openers too, so two birds one stone lol.
  11. Yeah deffo but for £40 even in parts I could get that back I think. Found these. All I'm missing is the clutch and a longer rod, but i may fabricate one of those as its just a rod. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LAND-ROVER-FAIREY-OVERDRIVE-CLUTCH-SLEEVE-OVERHAUL-KIT-/390708060308?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item5af803e094 http://stores.ebay.co.uk/shop4autopartsnet_W0QQ_fsubZ15167437
  12. So anyone think £40 is a decent price for a OverDrive
  13. Thanks for the reply. Right my plan is now this, to work with what I have and to get a set of 4.7 diffs. I will fit my overdrive when I have bought a clutch sleeve, and longer rod. Then see what that does. But I will look to get a set of standard Series 3 diffs. Atleast I can have either now.
  14. Here she is, missing the part you fit into the gearbox, but not bad for £40 What you guys think?? Also anyone got the part I need??
  15. Sorted just ordered a 7/16th male union, with 3/16th internal diameter for pipes.
  16. Cool. Right while I have you lot interested, can I pick your brains?? I have changed from 10 inch to the 11x3 brake setup and am running this Bearmach master. Now the Red is all plumbed up and is holding fluid. The GREEN however is not its leaking through the union where the copper pipe is going, now I'm unsure as to if its size (can't remember) think someone said it was 1/2 inch UNF but iirc that didnt fit. The fittings are 7/16th and 3/8th (from looking at my progress thread, put it there so I'd remember lo), so 7/16 being the larger?? If so, I need a 7/16th for 3/16th pipe, as I think mine is too large a bore in the union at 5/16ths I think. Does it need to be 5/16ths bore pipe?? As I can change that no problems. Or will the twin leading shoe setup be ok with 3/16ths pipe?? You can see from these I got the 5/16ths holed unions when they should be 3/16th.
  17. Shall be collecting said overdrive later, then when I have it I will let you know how much paid
  18. Saved that spreadsheet, will probably fit the Overdrive as I already have the diffs fitted, I will probably get a set of series diffs as mine that came out are munched. Didnt look to me like a standard series diff though, but can't be used as the crown and pinions gears are chipped and munched. This is my type of pie chart.
  19. Some very interesting comments here, from those who have had the setup looks like its a good setup. I at the moment am not planning on doing a lot off road, most will be driven in the summer roof off and cruising with a V8 soundtrack, so think I should be ok. If not I can always change the diffs again lol.
  20. Tbh guys don't worry too much about off-road, as the chances of it seeing anything technical is going to be negligible. Having never driven the Landy I'm sure its just something I will have to get use to, with the diffs. And the Over Drive I can fit it, and if I want I can either remove, or only use occasionally. OR I can always fit series diffs. I will probably get a set and see what they are like, and if I am planning to go properly off road I can plan in advance and change the diffs. This is not going to be used a lot, as I have 2 other cars, so mainly cruising around, or driving in the snow. Daily drive it is not. Braking wise I have changed from the standard 10 inch single line system (non servo), to 11x3 twin leading shoe fronts and 11x2 single leading shoe rears now twn line and servo assisted. So I'm well over specced in that department. Hmmm can see me having to change gear a lot to make sure the engine doesn't try and rip the box to bits, but driving vehicles with 12 manual gears it should be ok lol. Only way i could see the tyres helping is if I went to small wheels, which isn't going to happen as it would look bloody stupid. Just means that I am slightly more limited in getting larger tyres, but as I don't want to go bigger than they are standard just wider I should be ok. As for holding speed going up a hill, I can only imagine that the V8 will have the torque, but if needed I could always change down and add OD?? Same as dropping 2 on the truck and adding a half gear (1 back up) if that makes any sense?? Why didn't I just fit series diffs?? lol.
  21. As for tyre size one of 3 (as I have 2 already) 235/75r15, 7.50x16, or 31x10.50r15 (255/75r15). Or some 16 in the similar size. I'm not going to go large in tyres, as I think they look daft on a series, and I want the "standard" look. And from experience with my last 4x4 a Sportrak, it suffered badly if you went over a certain size as the acceleration went from normal to epically slow, and off road it got stuck, and nearly broke things. By keeping the wheels around standard size, but maybe a tad wider, will be what I want to do. So maybe fitting the OD when I have given it an overhaul, and if I don't like it I can always sell on as I will NEVER lose money.
  22. Very interesting, Id imagine the torque is higher on the derv, and torque will kill things. Plus Id imagine the V8 would deliver the power smoother than a turbo??
  23. Hmm conflicting things What are the 3.54 diffs like off road??
  24. Are the Disco diffs that bad off road?? Knew there was going to be a difference, but is it that bad? What would you say is best?? 1. Disco diffs. 2. Series diffs and overdrive. 3. disco and overdrive. Please bear in mind I probably never go too mad off road anyways.
  25. Was thinking more get up to speed then engage OD for cruising on the motorway. Hmmmm what to do lol.
