  1. Avoid Western Union. Cannot trust in them. As Si, I have found this out the hard way. Fortunately it was a small sum, 25 Eur. sent to Mexico to a bookstore. I sent them the Western Union code. They emailed me saying that such code was incorrect. My bank (wich is also a Western Union agent) said that money had already been dispatched in Mexico, but cannot say were or by who. After a formal complaint, I´m still waiting (two months now). Those 25 Eur. were sent again via Bank to Mexico, as I think that in this case both seller and buyer are victims and a third party has taken the money in the transfer. If this is not the case, the bookstore has fu**ed me twice
  2. OK, I know this is a Land Rover forum, but as some members have had experiences with other makes...can anyone help me with Mitsubishi gearboxes? The idea is to match a Mitsu gbox+transfer to the Tdi (maybe using Mitsu´s flywheel housing, starter motor, flywheel and clutch assembly) and use Mitsu´s low box as a "doubler" for a divorced LT230. As far as I know the 2.5 diesel non super select box has been used in early Shoguns, Hyundai Gallopers and L200s. There seem to be two types: steel + alloy and full alloy with integral bellhousing. Main differences? Are these boxes reliable and strong? Ratios? How is the rear UJ attached to the box´s output? Length? LT77+LT230 is 900mm from bellhousing to brake drum. I have choosen this box for my (vapour) build because they are cheap (200-250 Eur), easy to obtain and have a front drive output at the left, thus not interfering with LT230´s right offset. Mitsu´s front wheel output could be used for a VikingWinch style thing, if I were able to control Hi-Low and 4x2-4x4 separately. EDIT: posted this at a spanish Mitsubishi forum, but after more than 100 reads nobody had the answers...

  6. I really like the KAM design. Having the locking mechanism "outside" the diff carrier means that you can use the full lock ability along with a LSD. Even if money is tight you can fit a LSD an then upgrade it to locker with the adition of some more parts. Changing the disc LSD to ATB design and lowering the price to half will make them the perfect locker Have found this pic in the WWW. I think that it will fit in the dumb/idiot category.
  7. Yes, a KAM locker will be easily noticed, but ARB/Ashcroft type will be difficult to detect by MoT people/road patrol.

  9. In Spain the problem is that regulations have been changing in the past quite a lot of times and sometimes even engineers don´t know how to proceed. For example, a difflock cannot be made road legal because regulation is not clear about it
  10. Yes, it´s compulsory to ride with headlamps on in the case of motorbikes. Quads in Spain can be licensed as "VE" (Vehiculo Especial). Basically it will be considered a small farm tractor. "B" type license requiered and 45km/h max speed. Banned at highways. Headlamps compulsory like in motorbikes. "Standard" plates gives a quad the "motorbike" status. Up to 50cc is considered a moped. Up to 125cc, less than 11KW power and a maximum 0.11 KW/Kg power to weight ratio. You will need either a "A1" or "B" type license. Bigger than 125cc. Need a motorbike "A" type license. In Spain you will find that some regions will have their own police: ERTZAINTZA in the Basque Country (in basque meaning "the ones that protect the people"), FORUZAINGOA / POLICIA FORAL in Navarra and MOSSOS D´ESCUADRA in Catalonia. In the rest of Spain the GUARDIA CIVIL will be dealing with road traffic. Bigger villages will have a metro police for traffic affairs.
  11. Some people belive that, since they are ciclic recording devices, there is not a file storage place because it´s beeing continiously overwritten. If you use images for private use and don´t publish them, Personal Data Protection law will not be applicable and there will be no problen. Law says that citizens have the right to use all the methods and media available for having a proof of their innocence. In fact, some judges have used dashcam videos with no problem. It´s a strange law. Just imagine: someone comes to Lugo and wants to take a picture of our 2000 years old roman wall. If I´m standing in front of it you will need my permission for taking the picture! In real life, you will not have problems unless someone complaints to police against you. I have never seen police patrols looking for dashcams. Just try to hyde it (that will also help with long fingered people). I really like the flat design of some models. With a simple pair of spacers, they could be tucked in the gap between roof liner and the folded sun visor (less than one inch thick)
  12. Have just recived the answer from the spanish engineering company about suspension and bobtailing MoT approval: Bobtailing: NO. Chassis legs can be chopped and make bumper flush with body, but bodyshell cannot be cutted. Suspension (homemade): MAYBE. Once made, a mechanical lab will say if it´s OK or no. Don´t need it, since I have discovered axle winching... "Lowrider" chassis: NO
  13. Hi all, I have just talked about DVR, dashcam, blackbox or whatever name you want to give to this devices, in the "Tell RAC where you are" thread. There are tons of youtube videos from Russia. Aparently insurance companies are favouring the installation of such devices. I heard that in UK some insurers will give a special price for those having one. What about other countries? In Spain...you know...Spain is different! Dash cams are ILLEGAL. Personal Data Protection law says that people´s image, and even number plates, are "Personal Data" that needs to be protected. If you film someone with dashcam you can end at Courts. Fine ranges from 500 to 2000 Eur. In Spain all (authorised) security camera systems must show a signal telling that images are beeing recordered and where are they physically stored, in case you whant to use your rights about your image and other personal data.
  14. With the DVR system you can watch the recordered images and it will be like walking again over your footprints. You could tell the other person over the phone what have you seen to aid them to locate you.
  15. Today GPS systems are cheap enough. There are even DVR systems that will show in the video both speed and location. That way RAC will have your exact location. As an example: the GlobalSat RV-1000S, for less than 100 Eur. delivered to your door (eBay). Not a navigator, but at least shows you the position (most DVR systems give GPS data trough PC software, but don´t show it in it´s own screen)

  18. Now I don´t see why I should use a saloon car body. It was only one possible method for lowering the Disco, but I think that axle winching is the route to follow. If used only at rear axle it will be even more effective used alog with some extreme lift suspension at front. With height restriction problems solved, my brain is now working in a bombproof rear axle made out of modified Salisbury casing, cheapo off the shelf US Dana 60 components (1.5" 30 splines) sourced trough the www and a drop box (following your design). It will be a widened casing, matching front Y61 axle, with a super offset reverse rotation rear diff for portaled axle like ground clearance. The good old "gasogeno". Extremly popular in Spain in the post civil war years, due to propper fuel shortage. Free fuel in the woods...

  20. You cannot fit "car" tyres, because of load rating." Van" tyres are the way to go for city/road. 205/65R16 are the smallest ones I have found with adecuate load rating. 30mm drop. Yes, in a Disco, with it´s steped roof, a single rear axle winch will be enough. EDIT: Have been thinking about the fact that only a rear winch will be needed, and how it could be a multi purpouse one. MoT station will put the moddified car in a scale. Unladen weight + (number of places x 75Kg) must not exceed GVW. A friend lost 2 places in his Disco (33", front + rear HD bumpers, HD suspension parts...). Here in Spain we say "hecha la ley, hecha la trampa", wich could be translated as "made the rule, made the trick". Unladen weight is measured with petrol tank full. If I make some electrical "trick" I could have a "full tank" reading in dash with a nearly empty one. That way car will be SIX seater, instead of just five. In a 2 + 2 + 2 arrangement I could make a Maybach centre row of seats. Between seats, instead of champagne, I could fit a (even cooled!) rear facing winch. Cable will run over boot´s floor, inside vehicle. It will be used as a cargo loading winch. There will be a "door" with a roller in boot´s floor, just above "A" frame, for using as axle winch. Finally, there will be another "door" or gate that will take winch´s cable to a hawse in rear bumper, for beeing used as a recovery winch. A snatch block could be used at the hawse for redirecting the cable to the front bumper. Will try to make a sketch for this.

  22. That´s certainly one of the best ideas I have ever heard! Si, you are my hero! Winch(es) could be easily removed for MoT, or even get approved (that´s easy, as rules admit home made winch mounts) and will also double as cetre strap for avoiding propshaft UJ failure. Whith cable or rope, if correctly attached to chassis, they could even be used for recovery when needed.
