  1. Thanks everyone, I'll have a look when I give her a good clean tomorrow, The rad doesn't look clogged but I guess it could be.. that wouldn't affect the heaters though? It was previously a 2.5TD and has had a 200TDi conversion at some stage, hence the original dash.
  2. Had a great day at Devil's Pit today, but on the last lap of the course the engine started to get a little warm, and on the road home it started overheating, There wasnt much water in the expansion tank but I hadn't checked it that morning so it could have already been low. Eventually got home with the temp staying right at the very top of the white band nearly touching the black but not in the red. The heater got progressively colder and the engine appears to be running quite happily, she pulls well though i didn't push it hard. This makes me think it's either the water pump gone or simply an airlock in the system, rather than anything like the head gasket. Anyone got any ideas or things I should be looking out for?
  3. "We do not supply an email address otherwise we will get spammed by pro 4x4 people." I wonder why... Nobody seems interested in mr BMW or mr Merc with his big fat V8 engine in his prestige car (which weighs the same as a "gas guzzler" 4x4) and I wanted to politely ask why. I smell scapegoating.. Just rest easy knowing most people will continue to do whatever the hell they like and tell the damn hippies to shut up and start thinking about getting a job building a nuclear power plant. I for one will string them all up if they cover my coastline with wind turbines.. but that's another issue.. and breathe.. and calm.. ...and that sure was one ugly dog.
  4. Who in their right mind leaves a fridge open for 7 years? your milk would go off! Size? Pah! my 110 is smaller than my 200sx! And I'm sure my 200 does more damage to the environment with its de-catted 2.0 turbo engine, big noisy exhaust and burning rubber tyres. Everyone get the sports car, that's the real enemy!! On a more serious note, these people do my head in. Especially those who are eco friendly to be cool (yes i'm looking at YOU, university students! lol) and those who abuse a position of power in politics or the media to give people a private opinion rather than an unbiased fact. That said, the majority of vehicles used as a status symbol for those who really don't need them sure are a waste of time and space. Plus these days though big engines are no longer consigned to 4x4's. People want more power and the government wants low emissions. That means badly tuned big engines.. guzzle guzzle guzzle.. Rant over (ish)
  5. Thanks Tonk, that's pretty much answered my queries
  6. Makes you sick doesn't it I hope the police do take an interest and close the cowboys down with a large fine in tow. If they've done it once you can bet they're doing it regularly and it's just not on.
  7. excellent. thanks woodrow, i'll go have a chat to them sometime
  8. Checked the fluid level today. Very low (wasnt even touching the dipstick). Topped it up but it hasn't made any impact so I assume something has died on me. Will take a closer look during the week, and failing that I guess its off down to my trusty local garage again! I can't offer any more symptoms as I don't drive her too often (only when playing offroad) and it's been a while since I think it went. Mum's been complaining it's heavy so it's time to take a look at it!
  9. Hi all, A few years ago I was looking at converting a Series into a 200TDi. I've done a fair bit of reading up but I can't find anything decisive on it so it would be excellent if someone who has actually done it can tell of their experiences. Some places say it's fine, some say they wouldn't put a TDi on the stock transmission or you'll destroy the gearbox and propshafts. Would it be possible to put a 200TDi and 5spd box (lt77 or r380 etc) into a Series 2 or 3 and not destroy anything? How do people get around the lights in the grille of an S2, would they not get in the way of the rad/intercooler? Are there any other considerations? Not fussed about power steering or any fancy anciliaries. Sorry for all the questions but any experience would be greatly appreciated!
  10. My power steering has finally given up. It's been iffy for a few months but has now totally had it. Any ideas of what I should be looking for or common faults? A slipping belt perhaps? I vaguely remember a belt slipping a while back and whenever it did the steering got heavy.
  11. Did a little greenlaning the other day as a friend of mine lives out near Benington and said a LR owners club had gone down the lane at the end of his road the previous day.. always being up for it I said sure let's give it a go (especially as he said laners often use it so I assumed it couldn't be too bad). Anyways for the most part it was great, but there was this one bit where it got narrow and a tree had grown close to the track and there was a lot of camber tipping the vehicle to the left, say 40 degrees? It's hard to judge but it felt a lot! So much so that my friend wussed out and leapt onto my side of the vehicle! Not being used to seemingly top-heavy vehicles and lots of camber it was a little hairy.. I plan to have a lot of practice next time I go to Devil's Pit to familiarise myself with what the vehicle can and can't do along a slope. I am reluctant to just "go for it" though because it is my mum's 110 and she often uses it when my sister has borrowed her car so I can't go tipping it over! Can anyone recommend some good reading or offer some advice about dealing with camber and what a 110 on standard suspension can cope with?
  12. I was thinking topics more along the lines of what people have seen in the news, what they've been up to (non-lr related) etc rather than anything with an agenda. I guess it's just what I'm used to from the other car forums I post on and always thought it works pretty well.
  13. What about just a few short lengths of flexi? Get some good quality stuff - random I know but my old Primera GT had a flexi joint about a foot long between the frontpipe and the exhaust and it couldn't have been that bad for power as the engines were tuned to 150bhp standard which is a fair bit for an old 2.0 16v. Failing that I guess you could route it through the bulkhead and along the transmission tunnel inside the cab.. keep you warm in the winter!! EDIT: I think it's worth mentioning as well that the flexi pipes were I believe rubber inside with a braided outer so they were smooth. Not the ribbed type as seen on your tumble dryer -those would cause daft amounts of turbulence which you really don't want as Bull Bar Cowboy mentions!
  14. There are some comments on that thread who really make you worry about some people. Thankfully most of them seem to be quite reasonable in saying that it's his land and he can do what he chooses. Still, without the facts you just can't go sticking your uninformed nose into other people's business.
  15. Post counts are irrelevant, if you want to find out whether someone has a worthwhile opinion or not you can easily search for all posts they have made and read a few to see if they are good knowledge or meaningless jabbering. ..and I still think there should be a separate non-LR related forum created for people to chatter about anything and everything. It gives a place for building more friendships and makes it nice and easy for those people who only want to read technical posts.
  16. As a new forum user and being totally new to the LR world I was wandering round the internet looking for a forum to call home. Had a look in here, and although fairly new it seemed very friendly and people were willing to answer my daft n00b questions and help out, so I'm sticking around. I don't look at any others because I want an LR forum not a general offroad forum, and places like Devon 4x4 don't appeal as I live in sunny Hertforshire.. Good forum guys, keep it friendly and it can only get better with time as more posts and more information is contributed. Oh and I think its very important to let people post up any old rubbish that they want to jabber about. It helps develop friendships that run deeper than simply owning the same car as someone else, and in turn the community will flourish. Personally though I would add a Non-LR section so people can chat about anything in there, and discuss LR issues in the International and Technical sections. Just keeps everything in it's rightful place
  17. I think I'll have a good look once I get her home. If it's fixable I'll take that route otherwise its a DIY replacement job thanks all!
  18. There's a hole in the top of my fuel tank which leaks badly when the tank is more than half full. It seems a bit of a waste to not be able to use the full capacity and when offroading it'll leak even worse. I've just been quoted around £350+vat to replace the tank and cradle with brand new items which is a helluva lot of money. Is it a job which is possible to do on the driveway? The new tank apparently retails at around £170 (but they'd do it for £100 as part of the job) and the cradle at £35. The other option would be picking up a good tank from a similar age vehicle and fitting it myself if people think it's a feasible job for the driveway and is using a 2nd hand tank worthwhile?
  19. Should be good. No winch challenge for me but plenty of laning and a drive round Bures sounds excellent.
  20. To round off the story, it turned out to be the slave cylinder after all. I'd just been an idiot and refitted it upside down. oops!
  21. So a good coat of paint (with plenty of time spent in the preparation) and some waxoyl is basically the way forward then. Just keep an eye on it I guess! If anyone has the info to hand I'd be interested in knowing prices and hassle involved with galvanising a chassis.. just for future reference!!
  22. DIY stores (Focus, B&Q, Homebase etc) all sell sheet plastic. Most is thin for glazing but some is a bit thicker.
  23. Got a little surface rust on some parts of the chassis, and knowing that although the bodywork of my 110 is tatty the chassis is solid, I don't wan't to leave it. What's the best way of protecting the underside? Do people simply use things like waxoyl? I was thinking if i clean off the whole underside bit by bit and give it a good coat of hammerite that would surely be the best option? Time consuming but worthwhile in the end -just have to keep an eye on the chassis rails after going offroad in case any had been scraped off?
  24. I don't profess to know much about Land Rovers, but going on what my local LR specialist says I wouldn't bother rebuilding the 2.5TD as it's a pants engine. Find a 200TDi or something and put it in though I don't know if there are any gearbox issues. This is assuming the chassis is reasonable. At the end of the day Land Rovers seem to hold their value well so personally I'd fix it. Put whatever engine takes your fancy in, it's not like the engine bay is strapped for space! I'm sure someone with real knowledge will be able to offer a much more detailed view, but those are my thoughts anyway.
