  1. Got this back from the CRAG RTL down there.

Powys is one of the most BOAT rich counties in England and Wales. Many other routes are pure UCR and so will be unaffected by NERC. It is unfortunate that within the Brecon Beacon National Park virtually all routes are to become Restricted Byway. However this does not mean that they will 100% lose their vehicular right. Many of the better known routes such as Sarn Helen (North), Talybont and The Gap would almost certainly be worth contesting on the five year main use rule. As we are still waiting for NERC to come into force in Wales, we are still someway from the battle.

    Hope this helps

  2. As most people will know CRAG (www.crag-uk.org) will be at the Land Rover World Show at Eastnor Castle this weekend. It will be CRAGs first ever time at a show, if every thing goes to plan then it should be a good one.

Just to let people know if you are one of the first 30 people to join CRAG this weekend. You will receive £15 money off voucher for www.4x4funday.co.uk these were donated by Richard P Walsh of 4x4funday. You will be able to use these at any of Richards’s sites.

There will also be a raffle with the first prize been a Hi-Lift jack. So it will be worth winning.

I hope we will see a lot of people at the show as the weather is set to be sunny all weekend.

  4. I will respond to this.

I have never asked for a new set of wheels. Yes Matt did send me another wheel, very good of him as I did not ask him to. I had called him to asked if it was ok to weld the wheel up my self and I was going to do this. But on speaking to others I was advised that if the weld went again I would be lible, thats when I spoke to matt again. Matt returnd the 1st wheel to me rewelded on the out side, but with the crack still on the inside.

As for the offset, the offset was out to the ones I had by 10mm, to me this was a bit far out. I never said I had had the wheels from new, but I never said that I had them second had either. Maybe I should have. But as I said the first email was asking if its ok to reweld the wheels and in what way, Tig, Mig or Arc.

In this time I had a second wheel crack on the same spoke, looking from the back, valve at the top the spoke to right of the valve.

I do not know how old the wheels are, but they are the new type with the rolled edge. I have had a set of the old type without any problems at all. The wheels had no damage to the rims so I took them as not having a very life. As for rust, then yes theres some surface rust, but there is some on mose steel wheels unless you repaint them everytime you scratch the paint.

I do not recall Mat offering to repair both wheels FOC, but as said he did reweld the first wheel for me. As from the start I have nevered asked for a new set. Would I ever buy another set? I dont honestly know. As Matt has told me They are past their working life as they are about 4 years old.

I am not looking for a new set, I will end up rewelding the other wheel and reuse them or get rid of them, I dont know what yet.

  5. AFAIK the only change on OS maps will be in the key, changing the _._._ to say RB rather than RUPP - I believe the symbol stays the same

    STEVE

The maps changed last year to show open access land as well. But the key will change. But some of rights to the Byways will change as well. The only way to get the most uptodate info is to contact the local ROW office.

I use MM as I have most of the UK in 1-25000 and all the UK in 1-50000. I plan the routes on the 1-25000 maps and run the 1-50000 on the PDA, it takes up less roon on the memory card.

  6. I am looking for pictures of Mach 5s as made by Matt Lee. I am looking for pictures where the wheels have cracked. I am not looking for pictures of accident damage or of misuse. I have been told of people that have seen the cracked wheels but I need the pictures please. You do not need to post the pictures, just send me a PM and I will give an email address to send them to.

    Thanks in advance.

  7. hi, a mate of mine used mach5 wheels but found that they cracked, he was only doing the odd lane.

he uses wolf rims with centres turned round now, heavy but still going.

Dose he still have pictures of where they cracked?

    Paul

  8. They are 110mm from the outer rim to the inner of the bolt face, if that makes sense. Boxed as Colways, guaranteed for 4 years and a day B)

    :D:D:D:D:D:D

Can you PM me a price for 5 please? I take it they are 16 inch?

    Paul

  9. may have lasted longer if they had seen some paint at some point in there life

They have been painted, the top picture is with the wheel wet. The bottom picture is the second wheel, dry. Both wheels have "cracked" on the same spoke in the same way.

  12. I would guess from the manufacturer's point of view, as long as he's selling wheels at £100 a wheel and making money why would he be interested in increasing his manufacturing quality (and costs) to prevent failures. After all, I imagine most people would either chalk it up to abuse / one-off defect and either replace the wheel or change to another type. It's only because two have gone in exactly the same way on one vehicle that it's rung alarm bells.

At the end of the day, the wheels have fans in some areas where the look / design / availability of custom wheels outweighs occasional problems and high prices.

Personally I think they look quite cool on some vehicles but I'd never buy a set 'cos they're so flippin' pricey and there have been a lot of rumours on the grapevine about quality and after-sales service.

    Oh and:

    PM sent.

On another note, I will be at the LRW show. I will be doing the rounds so to speak. I will be asking the people selling these wheels whats the life span is. I just wonder what they will say?

  13. paul, i know the guy on the other forum offered to look at the welds of you cut out the damaged bit, but i wouldn't cut them up just yet, as you might need them in one piece later on.

some high-res, close-up pictures might be good enough for someone to get a rough idea why they failed, but if and when the manufacturer agrees to take them back they'll probably want them in one piece.

most universities with engineering or material science labs will be able to inspect them and tell you why they failed, the guy at our place retired last week unfortunately, and hasn't been replaced yet.

Thanks for that, I will not be cutting them up right away. I ask the makers not to weld the one wheel before they send it back to me, but was told its been done!!! But I still have the other with a crack in it. I am just waiting for the forms for VOSA to come before I do anything. The man on the phone was very intersted to hear about the cracks.

  14. I think the problem is that there is a point load on the rim, on five points, rather than the load spreaded around the entire rim, like a modular for example.

on the other hand, I have seen people seriously hammering these wheels without problems.

the 750 load rating on a 3050kg vehicle doesnt tell the full story: what was the axle load on te rear and front axle?

    Daan

I am not sure of that.

I have just spoken to a man at VOSA and he is sending me some paper work to fill in. If anyone else has pictures of this happen on other wheels please can they let me have them.

    Paul
