  1. If all this REALLY is about air quality and pollution, why is it that the Elephant(s) in the room are conveniently ignored.

    Aviation and shipping.

Aviation spreading pollutants evenly into the atmosphere ? Dumping TONS of fuel in flight ? How many aircraft in the air at one time ?

I am told by a friend in aircraft engine refurbishment that your average airliner produces around the same amount of NOX during the take off run (not climb) as 6000 diesel cars do in 0NE hour. But of course nothing will be done about that because that will affect the world economy.

Then there are the cruise liners...……… another completely unnecessary polluter

  2. Bigger intercooler is to cool a greater volume of air  if you have bigger turbo and pipes, not necessarily to make the air any cooler than a standard one.

Ambient temperatures have a great bearing on this too. Incoming air will be a LOT cooler in the middle of winter than the height of summer.

  3. Try as I might, I cannot find any info on these !

On a Discovery 2 V8 4.0, fitted to the oil pump body (crank driven serpentine) there are two blanking plugs. These close off the oil feed and return to an engine oil cooler if the cooler is NOT fitted.

I assume the Disco 2 did not have a cooler fitted, unlike the P38 RR which did, or maybe as an option only.

However, I would like the part number of these plugs, or the info/spec of them please ?

    Thank you

  4. You will also have to get the flywheel redrilled to take the smaller series clutch. Standard V8 one will not go in the series bellhousing.

You can fairly easily make the engine mounts and the spigot adaptor (lathe)

Attached is a bad photo to help.

I believe a friend of mine has got a complete kit in his barn somewhere, I will try and find it when I am there. No promises though, there is a LOT of stuff.

Which ever breakdown you choose to go with check the small print as many now only cover cars under 10years old.

I am now covered on any vehicle I am in with Britannia rescue through LV,  both me and my wife on the policy £108 recovered to anywhere in the UK.

i used to do it through my insurance but to many vehicles now and fell out with flux rescue, after being left for 4+ hours at the side of the road, yes not immediately their fault as they used subcontractors who kept letting me down but they didn’t handle it very well at all.

however previously when my wife broke down the girl on the end of the phone was so good and helpful and even rang before she finished her shift to make sure all was ok with the recovery and the horse etc. So it very much depends who is on the phones I think

That's the same policy I am on Jon, and I think you will find it covers both you and your "partner"(I do hate that word) in ANY vehicle too. Handy as we have four vehicles between us plus the Renault Master van.  They are also not vehicle ageist

  6. Been with the AA and the RAC. Never again.

Now with Brittania Rescue. Will recover the car to anywhere if you wish, or a local garage if you must. Only needed to use them once (Freelander) Birmingham to Kent. Took my word for it what the problem was, so didn't have to go through the charade of taking it to a local repairer to be assessed, so they can have you over a barrel over cost.

I only want my vehicle taken home, as I don't want anyone else touching it.

I'm genuinely amazed!  That's so much worse than my 18J that I'm glad my spare 19J motor stays in the back of the shed as a parts donor.  Even less incentive to fit it now.

My 19j 90 I had a couple of years ago only did around 24 - 25 on average too. so its no surprise to me.

The early 90 CSW V8 I have now only did around 15. The PO "tuned" it, and as usual never ran properly. had no engine in it for five years now, and although I OUGHT to keep it originalish with a 4.6 I have, I still don't know which way to go using that, or the Lexus V8, or even the BMW M57 diesel...…….both of which I also have.

The problem which I have with diesels (which I prefer TBH) is the expense of fixing them when they go bad.

But if the series were mine and I wanted to use a four pot, it would have to be petrol

I took the Disco to London in October and averaged 22.5 going down and 23.5 coming back the last time I took my P38 down I averaged 23. With those maths it would have been cheaper to take a V8  and I think it will only get worse.

Really ? I have never had a TD5, but I would expect nearer 30 ! But I expect it depends on how fast you are going.

  9. Provided it doesn't need new camshaft, rocker shaft assys, top hat liners, usual rebuild stuff, standalone fuel and ignition, different gearbox, radiator etc etc.

An easy two and a half grand or more, and that's for a "standard fit" engine. No point in fitting a shi**er. Not to mention the poor fuel consumption. Then there is LPG, in order to "save" money.

Better off fitting another TD5, or if you really don't mind spending the money, fitting a fit and forget engine...……….and I DONT mean a Tdi. It will probably come in the same, or less, and be more reliable and economical fuel wise.

    But then there is insurance...……………………………...

I worked on the installation of the ZF auto box in the Pinzgauer when the Euro III engine was installed. We too ended up with a somewhat jaunty angle, primarily to get the propshaft at the correct angles. Mys suspicion would be that this is the case here.

This is the only solution I can come up with.

But me two inch lift has ruined all that hard work...………………..

  11. I also have a ZF 4HP22 from a P38 2.5 diesel and that also is clocked by the same amount and in the same direction as the others, and as you say, the P38 props are on the other side.

I can see that LR might not want to invest in new castings for the V8 install in the P38, but the BMW engine was a new install.

    Makes no sense

  12. As I am sure a lot of you are aware, on RRC, Disco, P38 and Defender V8s, the ZF Auto gearbox is "clocked" or turned at an angle of around 10 to 15 degrees clockwise (looking from the rear) in relation to the bellhousing/engine.

Any ideas why this was done ?

Having looked at them, as far I can tell the transfer box linkage could have still been made to work, and the transfer box would not have interfered with the gearbox oil pan, so I am mystified why !

Transfer box to chassis clearance maybe ? Although it doesn't look that close to me, or propshaft angles ? Am I missing something obvious ?

Would like to know the correct reason. In order to work out if I could run it could run "straight up" on a different engine set up.

Anyone actually know, rather than conjecture or theory ?
