  1. OK thanks for the replies - tow ball mounting is out, will be looking for a decent winch bumper unless there is a way to modify the standard one to house the winch where it would be on a winch bumper? thanks!
  2. As above, need to get the alloys on my other car refurbished in gloss black - had two quotes for the work, both were £200 but one was with a powder coaters and one with a body shop (cars, not smellie girlie stuff) so, which is best and why?
  3. not sure on what kind of rating by ball has - its a twin electric setup that has adjustable height and is also a locking pin hitch too (the type with a spring loaded lock/free handle), looks like its been on there a while, was this kind of thing fitted from new? could cope with a rear winch bumper, but as I said - i think the front mounts look terrible!
  4. well we have tirfors at work for rehanging the railway overhead traction cable when it falls down so I might be able to sneak one out at weekends... any other ideas appreciated!
  5. I wouldn't mind getting a bit more in to off road driving and have been looking at the winches and winch bumpers available. And as I have not seen ANY that I like the look of, I came across these on the superwinch site. http://www.dborc.co.uk/goodwinch/pdf/towballmountingkits.pdf So, are they actually any use at all? I dont want major competition style recovery, just something that might get me out of a hole! I know it should be "function over style" but I really really want to keep my Disco looking standard-ish. thanks, James
  6. sounds like you have air in the coolant system that requires bleeding. when air passes through the heater matrix behind the dash, there is very little heat in it compared to the coolant that should be there so the air being blown over the matrix wont be heated. should be a guide on here on how to do it, although bleeding the coolant system on any vehicle is generally the same
  7. around 600 to a tank when I use it for work - 32 mile round trip each day. although considerably less for this tank as the fuel return hose from the last injector was leaking fuel everywhere!
  8. are they the right nuts for the wheels? not sure on LR vehicles but I know on some that the nuts sometimes have shoulders or tapers on them which can stop them being done up properly if they are not correctly matched to the wheels.
  9. as far as I can work out: You can tow a trailer up to 750KG providing the MAM of the train doesn't exceed 3500KG You can tow a trailer over 750KG providing the MAM of the train doesn't exceed 3500KG and the MAM of the Trailer doesn't exceed the Unladen weight of the Tow Car
  10. be aware that if you are caught over weight, you are not insured as you don't have the correct license to be driving the vehicle. I have looked into taking the +E license and it seems very expensive - around £600 for the course!
  11. the MAM of the 3 door disco is 2700KG. so your caravan would have to have a MAM of less than 800KG in order for you to be able to tow it legally.
  12. Do I want the reservoir cap on or off at this point? I guess off so that it can be topped up? thanks for the reply, and the instructions for changing the box were very helpful Les
  13. Just changed the steering box on my discovery 300TDi and I am having a nightmare trying to get all the air out of the system. It just doesn't seem to want to play! After replacing the box, I connected the hoses back up on the top, filled the reservoir up with atf and started the engine, and gave it a few lock-lock turns Opened the bleed nipple on top of the box and there was a loud hiss and then fluid appeared, so i tightened it back down and topped the reservoir up, and its still making the "I haven't been bled" noises when the steering is turned. I have been for a drive, repeated the process and no luck. Is there anything else I can do? I dont want to leave it like this but I am running out of time to work on it - my other car needs to come off the road for work too pretty soon. Put in here for maximum exposure Thanks, James
  14. removable steering wheel is a waste of time - pro thieves know about these and bring mole grips to steer with. personally, i would make sure its alarmed to scare off the "have a go" thieves and make sure its insured properly and to its full value for the pros. my other car (Mitsubishi Evo 8MR) is a highly desirable theft, and if the pros want it, they'll take it no matter what I try to do to stop it. As said, the HIAB is the weapon of choice now, and there's no stopping them really. The other choice is that a group of them come into your house, batter you and take your keys. you wont stop that either really.
  15. yeh they come with them, but I am not sure if they need changing or not - I work with the bloke who is selling it and although i trust him that the rest of the vehicle is mechanically sound, he doesnt have a missus and his version of "the interior is fine" is probably very different to what my missus is expecting! So i thought i'd get on here and ask you helpful lot what was about! I know that exmoor trim do bits, but the V8 LT85 doesnt seem catered for when it comes to things like sound deadening and carpet/ mat sets! all advice and ideas appreciated! poking fun.....well, to be expected i guess!
  16. I am possibly looking at selling my discovery and buying a friends 110 V8 - the only thing that is putting me off is how comfortable the cabin area is. Its a CSW so its not too bad, but what options are there for making the interior "nice"? The missus says she can cope with the discovery interior, but gives me a dirty look whenever i mention the 110! soundproofing carpeting headlinings seat options doorcards anything else? I know i could grow some balls and do what I like, but then i'd spend most of the time camping on my own. and thats no fun! cheers, James
  17. pretty sure you dip the clutch, drop it into the neutral position clutch out, clutch in and into high range, clutch out again. although keep the main lever in gear all the time - although dont quote me on that. I do remember trying it how the manual states to do it but it made some serious clunking so i stopped!
  18. not a lot of good if its a daily driver or regularly used. at least with a pre check, you know its going to fail and can do something about it whilst still having a ticket to drive with!
  19. didnt think dollys were legal for general towing, only for recovery of a broken down or accident damaged vehicle?
  20. gaskets could be a manufacturing fault or installation fault, so dont rule it out too early! gaskets are easy to check and replace
