uninformed
Hi all, can anyone, with any certainy, tell me what material the axle flanges (where swivel balls are bolted to) on a 98 110 front axle housing is? I have to weld some dissimilar material to them and want to choose the best filler rod thanks Serg
western
I think it would be better to bolt the 'new' bit on, the axle casing is cast, not sure if welding to it is a good idea.

It will be bolted as well. Not sure if that flange is cast, much of the housing is not IMO. The 2 halves would be cold form pressed out of sheet/plate. all the brackety is folded sheet. The rear Rover housings circa 95 definitely have cast steel flanges and ball joint mount. But as they are cast steel, not cast iron, they are quite weldable, as evident in the fact that they are welded to the housing via the GMAW process. The front flange could be of higher grade than mild steel as it has more load on the front with a smaller dia and smaller bolt pcd when compared to the rear. Maybe why it is friction welded to the housing not GMAW. But it does have one side of the spring seat welded to it, again GMAW process. cheers Serg
FridgeFreezer
^ As uninformed says, the cases are pressed steel although the flanges are cast and welded on.
Retroanaconda
I welded new spring brackets on to mine with a normal MIG. Haven’t fallen off yet!
