Defender768
Hi Guys, My 90 has started pouring out white smoke on cold startup and sounds like she’s only running on 3 cylinders and then the 4th kicks in. Runs perfect after a few minutes and on startup once warm. Any ideas of where to start would be hugely appreciated.
crwoody
Personally, I'd be checking the glowplugs first.
Ex Member
Bad spray pattern, low compression, retarded timing.
cackshifter
There is another thread on here with an identical start, that was probably due to 2 injectors needing a service. As said above glow plugs are an easy thing to check too. White smoke can be due to retarded timing, but how would it suddenly retard? That can only be timing belt related. Roverdrive
Tdi s rarely need glow plugs to start unless it is extremely cold. Mine is ok down to 2c this winter from personal experience. If there is ice I do allow the glow plug light to extinguish before starting. I would look to checking compression and possibly injectors. vulcan bomber
I've got a set of Rods sat in the Shed for a 300TDi. Your welcome to them for a few beer vouchers. An engine rebuild is a doddle, and less risk than buying a dog of a replacement.
Defender768
How easy is it to do ? Not much mechanical experience. 4th piston isn’t coming up high enough bores are also very glazed Edited April 15, 2020 by Defender768
vulcan bomber
If you can hold a spanner and follow basic instructions then an engine rebuild is not particularly difficult in my opinion. Sounds like the block needs pulling out and giving a good going over. Where are you located roughly?
