anirae
Hi all, I'm new to this forum, and as it's often the case on different forum i'm just presenting myself future project with a 109 and past experiences with other vehicules. I'm definitly not into restoring all vehicules to a NOS state but simply lovin old mechanics (mainly diesel) making them in good enough state to travel long distance for expeditions in foreign countries. I'have crossed africa many times, either in an old merc truck or mauritania in a 109 serie 2a, latin america, asia etc. My next project is a trip to the step of Kazakstan Uzbekistan Tajikistan etc for a 6 month to 1 year travel and for this trip i'm planning to ride a 109 or 110. (my preference would be for the 109 much cheaper, and very simple mechanics.) anyway congratulation for the forum ps excuse my english it's not my native langage

Snagger
The 109 is a lot simpler. The only downside is the less robust gear box, but if you overhaul that before you go with decent parts, it’ll cope fine. There are plenty of things you can do to a Series vehicle that make it more comfortable for long drives without damaging its character and are reversible, like fitting parabolic springs, noise insulation, some different seats and overhauling the heater for winter. If you are reasonably fit, you can put in a Metro/Montego/Maestro steering wheel for more leg and arm space (smaller diameter wheel and closer to the dash).
