Wibble wibble wibble. You guys have lost me with all this speaking in tongues, and now Ive got a headache. I couldnt learn any of this stuff due to lack of Gorm.

With respect, If it really  is that easy, why has none of the great and good done it ? Surely it would be popular conversion ?

Im sure you would all be better off cobbling up a gearbox controller for my ZF 4HP24 😆

@smallfry - the short version is modern diesels are a fair bit more involved to run ECU-wise but of course anything's possible... the problem is the R&D process requires at least one or two sacrifices to the dyno gods which stacks up a bit quick as a home project, buying 3-4 good TV8 engines just to hopefully end up with one running one starts to feel quite expensive.

The 4HP24 controller has come up a few times and I'm absolutely sure it's a very simple thing, if someone had the info on what exactly happens when & what the ECU is driving (how many solenoids at what power rating) and what it needs to "know" (RPM, load, throttle...?) or maybe just an "up" button and a "down" button and call it done - that would likely be a pretty simple project.

Look up megashift, that works with an hp24, commonly used in BMW as well, and uses same shift pattern as 4 speed GM boxes.

Just two solenoids, gives you the four speeds, don't remember if the hp24 needs a line pressure signal, but that's the only other thing, and simply done.

This clever chap from Iceland makes nice ECU's for petrol and diesel engines.

The one in the link is for common rail diesel engines and are quite reasonable priced, for 4 to 8 cilinders. You can ask if your engine of choice is not on the list.

Even plug and play kits for some nice Mercedes engines: OM611,612&613.

For example OM648 is a nice 3,2L 6pot based on the legendairy OM606, 204hp standard. It has the sump on the right spot (rear) with bullet proof 5sp autobox from Merc ML you can buy an adapter to fit directly to LT230. It is al there ready to pick up... But OM628 4.0 V8 is also possible.

So GB1,1k for ECU, around 1k for Ole gearbox controler and about 1k for the adapter and you are about set.... A good engine and gearbox together can do anything between 1 and 2k. So on a budget of 5 to 6k it is possible.....

Worth noting that Baldur's DID1 only does solenoid type injectors, so isn't any good on stuff newer than an OM648. Whilst on that subject, the OM648 is not always rear-bowl sump. The S-class ones are front sump sadly!

The bmw m57 can be made to run out of the bmw using the existing ecu - but it needs mods to the ecu ‘files’. Later the engine the more involved.

I’d suggest you need too find some one interested in hacking the TDV8 ecu. Try Marcus Williams at MWMachines. He has a guy who does his ecu work. You might find it’s not worth his while, but you never know.

Or learn how to hack ecu’s!

So... use a OM648 or OM628 if you really want a V8. Newer is not always better. 😁
