monkie
Defender 200tdi. Was working absolutely fine last weekend. Been sat for a few days in the week, turn the key and it's absolutely dead, no clicking, no attempt to turn the engine over. I can hear the starter relay clicking behind the fuses. I get 12v at the white/red tracer lead to the starter motor solenoid. I have put a jump lead from the negative battery terminal straight to the engine block. I have also charged the battery just to rule it out. Still nothing. I'm thinking the starter motor has failed somewhere. Do they just fail like this with no warning? I've started to take the manifolds off so I can get at the starter motor in the morning. Anyone have any ideas?
Bowie69
They can do, aye. Gentle persuader can sometimes get them going for a while.
western
Could be a stuck solenoid, If uou can give it a tap with hammer it may decide to run, but it will fail again, so might as well change it, easier with manifolds out of the way.
monkie
Thanks chaps. Is it the solenoid I'm tapping to see if I can free it? So do they just stick open resulting in the no attempt to start I'm experiencing?
Bowie69
Yup.

western
Yep, it's not the easiest of starters to access either, I replaced my starter a while ago because I though it was failing, turned out to be a dying battery, but the starter was over 25 years old as it came with the engine in 1994. Peaklander
We had a solenoid failure on a CRV. There was no warning at all. Managed to overhaul the starter and replaced just the solenoid. The EGR system needed to be removed to just be able to see the starter.
monkie
10 minutes to swap out the starter motor for the spare one I kept. What feels like a day with grazed arms to put the manifolds and bits and bobs back on that you have to remove to get at the damn thing Thanks for the advice fellas
western
Probably the worst job on a Defender spec 200tdi.
