ThreePointFive
Would anyone be willing to measure the length of the pipe from the radiator to the smaller (front) inlet on the 200/300 TDi expansion tanks? I could also really use photos/measurements of the bracket that supports it on the inner wheel arch and how it bolts up at each end. Better yet - but a complete longshot - it would be great if someone would be willing to lend me a bracket so I can copy it to make my own. I'd pay all costs, of course. Just not willing to pay the £50 the usual retailers want. I don't suppose anyone knows the internal diameter of the lower pipe that comes off the tank and what, if anything, would happen if it was blocked off and only the smaller one used? Bowie69
I have an RRC tank here, I believe it is the same or very, very similar.... I may have a bracket also, or part of one, but would be from an RRC of course... The bottom connection is ~20mm, this is where the flow from your cooling system goes when it expands. The top, small hose is just a steam port really, if you only use this and block the lower, larger port coolant will have no easy path back into the rest of the system on cool down, as it is higher in the tank, and could potentially starve the engine of coolant if it gets low for other reasons. I use a 38mm to 20mm tee in the bottom hose, works perfectly.
stevebus
I've got one here fella, assuming the bracket your on about supports the fuse box on the left hand side of it looking from the front, I can take it off through the week if that's any good, when it stops chucking it down I'll send you a couple of pictures to see if we're on the right track
western
Small hose to rad 43cm, Forward pipe stub on bottom of the tank is 6mm internal & 12mm external including the hose retention ring, Support bar from tank to inner wing 25cm long x 20mm wide x 2mm thick it has a twist so the top bolt faces forward & lower bolt faces engine. IIRC all the bolts& nuts are M6
stevebus
Is this for a Defender then, I've got the Disco type one and nothing like Westerns pictures
ThreePointFive
I love this forum. Everything I need is in the few posts above! I can't repair my metal tank so after seeing that a new one is more money that the Allisport version, I went with that. The downside being that it's this TDi style of tank. It looks like I've painted myself into a corner. I can't T-piece into the bottom rad hose as I already have too many bits (fan thermostat and heater/inlet manifold) spliced into that. But maybe I can put a Y-piece into the smaller pipe coming off it. I think it's 16mm, so it's becomming a bit of a mess of different sizes. The unknown is whether that acheives the same result as being directly connected to the bottom hose. Otherwise, I could block off the smaller pipe on the tank and get a 20mm>6mm(?) connection into the top of the radiator but I don't know if that's going to work the same. Edited April 23, 2023 by ThreePointFive The larger tank pipe is 16mm on mine, so at least that would all be one size - if it works.

Given how simple it is, I will be able to make something up just by looking at the photo/doing some in-situ messing around. Thanks again, though.
Bowie69
Yes, with a heater, your plan to tee off that line is ideal and actually helps with routing - I forget sometimes that some people have such luxuries
