Happyoldgit
Owatrol Oil - anyone have any experience using it? I’ve seen it mentioned on a classic tractor page somewhere that it’s good for long term protection for tin work and results in a long term oily rag look. Anderzander
Yes - it’s good stuff and very good for oily rag.
Alsace_rangie
makes a good primer as well. On the underbody/sills etc. I spray over it with that black (not bitumastic) paint. Seems to do a good job, and easy to re-do bits that get chipped.
joe1
No I've never used it... Because It's oil based it mixes with the oil based rust-oleum type products that the tractor crowd use (owatrol also market it as a 'paint conditioner'). Probably ok as a bare metal protectant but I wouldn't aerosolize it with spraying without suitable PPE -although using a schutz gun would be ok. And of course once it's been applied conventional paints might have difficulty adhering over it......but it apparently needs a degreased clean surface to adhere to. Might be good for protecting tools though 🤔

It's sold as a primer for use on rusty surfaces, though I also use it over new welded in patches ; there is another product for clean metal but I've never used it. Paint sticks well on top. Of course, I've never tried it with a high gloss finish paint, but rusty metal sort of doesn't need that 🙂
muzaz
Used it on my workshop benches, mixed with paint. Been nine years since applied and no sign of rust anywhere. That being said this is indoors and a relatively dry environment.
smallfry
Its primarily a wood treatment, similar to Osma oil. We used to use it on furniture, cladding, and window frames It dries out, so I can't see that it will be long lasting. Will probably peel off in the long term.
