V8RRC
Evening all, Just a quick question regarding the output voltage of my alternator! I changed my alternator about 2 months ago & all seemed ok, I have a digital voltmeter fitted & it has always sat around 13.9 to 14.1 volts when the engine is running until Wednesday it deceided to change & it now sits at either 15 or 15.1 volts & only dips slightly when loaded! (lights on ect) Today to eliminate a fault on the volt meter I tested it with my multimeter & it gives the same reading! So the question is, is my replacement alternator throwing a wobbly & is likely to pack in or is a 15 volt output ok? Cheers,
western
15v is to high, something is not right with the alt, probably a faulty regulator pack. should be around the 14.3 to 14.5v when running.
V8RRC
Cheers Ralph I did not think it was right but thought I would ask & get a second opinion!
LandyManLuke
Anything over 14.4v (typically) and you're gassing the battery, not good at all.
western
Cheers for the confirmation Luke, I was hoping you would jump in
Roverdrive
Yup. Anything over 14.5 v and you risk cooking the battery. Sounds like the regulator pack has thrown its hand in.
Jon White
Yep - 15v is too high - its knackered! Jon

LandyManLuke
Which alternator do you have? If it's an A127 type the regulator/brush pack is only about 12 quid and you can change it in ten minutes.
