300tdi Alternator

Recommended Posts

Hi guys.

I have a 1995 Defender 300tdi and the alternator is starting to squeel. I thik a bit of sand has got into the front bearing.

Anyway my question is will a Disco 300tdi alternator fit.

Also I will have to take the pulley off my old one to get the cooling fins off. Any tips for doing this.

Ta.

It will fit but it's a different alternator; the Defender one is 65A and the Discovery one is 100A. You can put the 100A one on and some people do this if they add a rev counter to the vehicle as the std Defender one doesn't have the terminal to drive the rev counter.

yes add another decent gauge wire down to the starter motor

plus watch the pulley alignment

I fitted he Disco 100 amp and got through 3 aux drive belts before Mike put me onto mis aligned pulleys

the alt was sitting 1-2 mm back this was throwing the belt off an chewing the side of them.

My MM 65A A127 (Lucas in disguise) has a W terminal and was fitted as standard with a VDO rev-counter. Unfortunately it was also fitted with the early large pulley which caused the rev counter to under-read. With the later smaller pulley the reading is now correct. This is the reason there are two fan belts for Defenders, though we normally fit the longer one to both. Another peculiarity of my vehicle is that the engine is an 18L instead of the more normal 16L. Dunno what that means .....
