western
Does anyone know if during heavy winching ( not that I am planning that of course ) the alternator warning light would come on if the batteries were being dragged too low or should I fit a voltmeter? mine never has & I've winched some heavy loads without problems. Roverdrive
OK Cheers for all of the info, and your patience guys. Looks like the set up will be for Britpart 12,000 lb winch, twin batteries, Xcharge with manual override - just in case! Time to go shopping. simon red90
i run 2 completly isolated* systems, one for winching and one for the vehicle electrics. i have x2 100amp identical alternators and x2 excide gell batteries. i have never had any problems with the set up at all. *i also have a electric relay to link both positive terminals in cases whereby winching really hard, my voltage drops significantly. this doubles the max available current. Roverdrive
That is an interesting solution, but TBH for the amount of work my winch will be doing, I don't think I will be going down that route. What is the advantage of using two alternators rather than upgrade the existing one? Is it purely cost? I would have space to do that as ther is no aircon on my v8. Hmm electronic clutch for the second alternator to save horsepower??? Perhaps for a future vapour project. As I said, mine is not a challenge truck, so the winch is more a "get out of jail free" card. From all the info that has come my way, I think I would get away with the two batteries directly linked, but am wary of draining both batteries, so will go for the isolating relay in between. The split charge system of Reads90 looks pretty trick, but I don't think I will be using the winch enough to justify that set up.

When we went round Aus we did not turn the fridge off for 7 months. The winch is just for emergancy

If you only envisage winching occasionally i would ask why bother with two batteries? One decent battery would be fine IMHO.
Roverdrive
Just a natural paranoia about flattening the only battery I have!
