JonJon
Howdy! Can anyone point us to a resource which step-by-steps us through fitting a non-LR stereo to our 90? I guess it's not too dissimilar to a car, but then I haven't done that before either! Cheers all
disco_al
wiring diagram in the haynes manual can help (sometimes) to id the supply wires and the speaker wires. if that doesn't help then use a multimeter to determine the permanent and switched voltage feeds, speakers are usually paired, may help to take the speaker out and see what colours the wires are. western
the connection info in the new stereo's booklet is very useful, if the 90 already has a radio, just make a note of which wire goes where, the power & earth should be easy to find, most units are powered via a ignition controlled feed [it'll only be active when the ignition is on] but it's possible to have it on a permanent feed, [no need for ignition to be on]. There wasn't one already in and we have 2 or 3 stereos kindly donated by 'friends!' clearing out their attics/sheds, none with handbooks/wiring diagrams unfortunately, only spiders, none of whom seem keen to help. Having spent so much on the vehicle itself, we're trying to cut costs by spending on ancillaries (like diesel). Might be more hassle than it's worth though? western
OK, try a google search for each of the units makers, they may have a downloadable instructions on their websites, most LR ignition feed wires are white/red trace & earth is normally black, permanent feed is purple [should be one in the dash centre for the cig lighter & clock] speaker wires are usually twined with one being a solid colour & the 2nd with a black or white tracer along it, one pair to the left speaker & the other pair to the right speaker, there maybe a note of which connections does what on the back of the stereo units. LandyManLuke
The most important thing here, is whether the stereo has ISO connectors, and what wiring you already have in the 90. If you've got a stereo with ISO connectors, and half decent wiring in the landrover, connecting the two is pretty simple. If you're putting the stereo in the standard position most of the wiring should be there, at least for a 2 speaker setup. If you're going for a four speaker setup and/or putting the stereo in something like a cubby box, you'll have a bit more to do. The neatest solution will probably be to buy an 'iso connector to bare ends' - basically the other half of the connector on the back of the stereo, with 6" of wires coming out of it, which you can join up to the landrovers wiring - then you'll be able to swap and change for any stereo in the future, and it'll work with the same wiring. If your stereo(s) look like this, you're in luck. the ISO connector is the bigger one on the left.

siearl
Jonjon I have a wiring harness for a landrover so you dont have to cut and connect the cables from the stero if you want it, otherwise will end up in the bin during a clear out

mpb
I fitted one from scratch the other day using the genuine kit from a chap off ebay. The power plug:- Perm live - Cut the purple wire in the fuse box & connect into that. Ign - Sould be taped to loom at the back of the dash orange/white wire, with bullet conector on end. Earth - A bolt on the fusebox, Lights - I used a piggy back crimp on to the lighter socket lights. The speakers you'll need the spacers to fit them to the dash. I used a 4" holesaw from Screwfix (about £8) to cut the holes in the dash. Connect that in to the speaker connector. I also put a speaker each side of the back door. http://www.ownerinfo.landrover.com/extfree...rprod/index.jsp In section 1 click on Defender In section 2 click on Accessory fitting instructon Then click continue. On the second page is the Audio Fitting Instructions for a defender. Hope that helps, if you need any more info give us a yell.
