WATER PUMP AND OIL SEALS

After replacing the swivels a couple of months ago, today i noticed one of the swivels is leaking oil through the drum onto the tyre. Somewhat annoying since i used genuine seals!

Now i've always had problems keeping the oil in; only succeeding by replacing the distance piece the seal sits on and using one shot grease. This worked quite well with the cone setup for a number of years; however now i'm using railko bushes so i must use oil

So now i have bought some old type metal and leather seals! Should I use those or the plastic type again?

Changing the subject to water pumps, there not cheap. I've gone through two in about 15000 miles (always the bearings seem to go) Are there any good suppliers anyone knows about? or even better.. does anyone have a genuine one lying around! This being for a '53 2litre petrol

Can't help with most of that apart from saying that non-genuine water pumps don't seem to last. I always make sure I hose mine down after playing in mud and give a squirt of white grease or WD40 behind the pulley towards the nose bearings. Letting a grease nipple into the tell-tale hole has been considered before too.

Though I have a IIA, I've had it for 10 years and never toughed the water pump. Sure you aren't getting the belt too tight? As far as hub seals, I've just gone to my local auto parts store and had them order me a double lipped seal. As long as the wheel bearings are tight, I've yet to have them leak either. Sorry I don't have a number handy, but with inner, outer and thickness, it should be easy to look up.

Hi 80inch,

Aren't the Series 1 waterpumps rebuildable? without looking at my manuals I can't say for sure but memory tells me the bearing/seal pulls out as a unit. I do have several 2nd hand original ones , but no idea how water tight they may be....with the super wide vee belt and dynamo you shouldn't need to have the belt that tight either. i used to run a 16ACR alt. on mine and that was fine too

Can check the factory manual/parts book if you need the info

Cheers

I wouldn't say the belt's to tight.. well its adjusted to give the right 1/2inch movement midway between the pullys. I found a magazine write up about them from 10 years ago, going on about quality etc.. I wish i hadn't broken the origional when i removed it all those years ago.. they are rebuildable.. but i think these pattern ones are not! steve b if you do have one going spare let me know.. I plan to buy another pattern to tide me over for the time being..

cheapest i've found is from land-rover orphanage for £35.. everywhere else is £50.. not exactly alot but it is when they don't last long.

on the subject of swivels i've immersed the leather and metal type in gear oil overnight.. will try that one tomorrow. I'm thinking the leather swells up and helps create a good seal?

Leather seals do leak a bit initially, but oil makes them swell and this usually stops after a short while. Soaking them in oil quite often prevents this from happening.

I have a S1 workshop manual and it lists the parts of the water pump seperately, but whether or not you can still get them is a different matter. I rebuilt an 8-bolt water pump on a S2 a few years ago and I got the kit from Craddocks. You need a vice or press to do it though.

Craddocks list a complete water pump for £50 (part No 269974), but they might still sell a repair kit. There are quite a few specialist S1 parts suppliers that might sell it - the S1 website would be a good place to look as they are listed there.

I definately have a spare used original if you want one , and can probably track down a rebuild kit.....there is a Series one Gnome :P I know of in Wales , should be able to find him through some friends over there.

Are you in Suffolk on your travels at all?

Cheers
