Good evening!

I just wanted to say hello and introduce myself to you all. My name is Geoff Clement, im 28 from Sevenoaks in Kent!

My current but hopefully very soon to go vehicle is a Disco 3.9 V8 with lpg. But i have set my sights on a couple of Defender Td5's, one a 90 the other a 110.

My question to you guys is this: What revisions would have been made between a 2000 model and an 03 Td5? The reason i ask is the two vehicles im looking at are on those plates, and im wondering if the latest incarnation is the better vehicle reliability wise etc etc.

Here they are:-

Welcome to LR4x4.com, Please read the pinned info at the top of the forum thread listing, it'll help you use the forum.

2 very smart vehicles there, Depends on what you want to use it for & if a 90 will be to small or the 110 to big, I don't think much changed on the Td5 at those model years, extrenally only the rear fog & reverse lights went from rectangular to round ones, internally IIRC just interior trim changes but nothing major, all the running gear would be the same except on the 110 the rear axle is either the Salisbury type or the later XD/wolf type.

the main (unseen) differences are the ECU... the later 2003 version would be the "flashable" type, but this only really comes into being if you decided to get the ECU program changed (for more power).

also, the throttle potentiometer chaged from a 2 track to a 3 track unit, supposidly better/more reliable.

and the important one, is the cylinder head is different on the later engine. the early ones had 2 fuel rails drilled through the head, and were prone to leaking/cracking, resulting in the sump filling with diesel.

later (2002 i think, onwards), had only one fuel rail in in the head, and an external pipe for the other, plus a different fuel cooler (and fuel layout i think) to conform to euro3 emmissions.

Porny would be the man to answer thoroughly the differences.

Thank you both for your responces and for the kind welcome to the forum!

In answer to your questions, i run a landscape garden maintenance business. I currently have an ifor williams trailer that i tow about day in day out. In my mind im hankering after a 110 for its better towing characteristics and load space within the vehicle. I currently have my discovery rear seats folded down to accomodate equipment i dont wish to have in my trailer (security reasons mainly) and so im thinking that the loading space im used to is closer in terms to the 110 than the 90.

I have read up and have heard there are a few concerns as mentioned above regarding the head, coolant leaks and cracking and for a relative newcomer to the LR fraternity concerns me somewhat.

Logic might not always prevail, but im thinking that a more modern defender, with some techinical revisions would make a safer and more reliable purchase.

If you tow alot i would go for the 110, more stable in my opinion and loads of usable space for out of site items, which may mean you dont need the trailer as much. if you will always need the trailer then maybe you could work with the 90, (not that much space in them though compared to Disco as you use it)

Wont the 110 have the newer dash as well plus be higher road tax next year if after March(?) 03 for first reg?

90 slightly more economical than a 110 too (in my experience anyway)

You may want to consider one financial consideration. If you ever need to drive inside the M25 ring you may want to avoid the '00 vehicle because it will become liable to the London Emissions Zone charge in 2010 which is £100 per day! The '03 vehicle is not currently going to be liable and this only applies to van configuration not station wagons (though Land Rover records being what they are some original CSWs are registered as vans, including mine at present).

If you need space in the back, don't choose the 90.

MY2002 on TD5's are much better than previous models. Only downside to the 110 is less turning circle and the vans sides make manouvering in tight spaces more fun with the 110 than the 90.

There won't be any difference in road tax as both will be commercial, so 185 pounds per year.

Cheers

Steve

If the condition/price differences between the two aren't considerations then I'd go for the 110. I bought a 90 and while it's awesome and carries lots, there are times when the extra space in the 110 would be very helpful. Even the 110 is no bigger than a large estate car really, and if you've got the space you can choose to use it or not, if you haven't got it in the first place, well....

I'm not sure when LR made the change, but you might find that the rear door has changed between the two, from a two piece to one piece construction. The older two piece ones were prone to cracking. You can tell by looking at the bottom of the rear centre window - the newer ones will have rounded corners, the older ones will be square. Someone with a better knowledge that me will do doubt be along to clarify

Morning guys. Well i made the journey on saturday up to Tamworth to have a look. We met at the tamworth services and spotted it accross the car park. It looked awesome!

Started to look around it and was slowly loosing the grin as i started to see the condition of the paint. To cut to the chase it had had a respray which looked like it had been attacked by a 5 year old high on coca cola. Over spray in the engine bay over the engine cover, over loom cables. It had over spray everywhere..even over the dash.

I was more than a bit miffed given that he didnt say anything about this and he knew how far i was coming to view it.

I was hoping it to be a genuine 110 in original condition.

Under the matts was thick heavy silt that was still sopping wet and corrosion was apparent.

Underside was heavily treated with waxoil so couldnt really tell how good the condition of the chassis really was, but it looked sound.

In the end i decided that it wasnt for me and made the return trip back. So the hunt continues...

You might think i was being a bit pedantic about the spray job, but its only something im going to have to pay to put right and for that money id expect at least original paint!

Not at all, it pays to be pedantic and taking time to find the best vehicle you can get will pay dividends in the future, believe me (I learned and continue to learn the hard way  )

Good luck hunting, I'm sure you'll find what you're after
