Overheating - possible causes

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

noticed on the way into work this morning that the temp gauge was climbimg towards the H end of the gauge at an alarming rate of knots. It used to sit right in the middle whatever the ambient temp and driving conditions!

having had a look under the bonnet the top radiator hose is really hot and the bottom one is a lot cooler - so it would appear that the thermostat is opening and that the fan is cooling the radiator effectively.

before I get too carried away with stripping stuff down has anyone had a similar problem to this before? Any tips as to what the cause might be.

Many thanks,

Dave.

Your summary of hot at top and cold at bottom could be a lack of water circulation, but I've not heard of a water pump stop working without giving obvious signs like screeching or generally leaking water.....

Checked Rad - everything seems intact, although quite a bit of the 'fins' between the radiator passages seem to have disintegrated. This hasn't happened in the last few days though so I can't see how it would cause the truck to suddenly start overheating.

I'm going to change the thermostat as a matter of course - just not sure whether to go with th 74 or 82 degree unint, what do you guys recommend?

Could be a stuck stat, it will trickle enough water through the bleed to get the top hose hot but not flow enough to cool the engine, so the bottom hose will be dead cold as it's only a trickle of hot water to cool down across the rad. Buy a genuine stat, ask me how I know.

probably hasn't but as more have disintegrated over the last week or so the rad looses it's cooling efficentcy so the system tells you it's far to hot.

I'm certain a new rad will cure it, sure did on my 200Tdi a few years ago.

Alternatively -

topping the coolant up with about 1 3/4 Litres of fresh fluid seems to have done the trick

I'm going to try and find a hole to crawl into now

:rolleyes: write out 1,000 times 'must check fluid levels frequently'

a cheap fix too :D
