Which beadlock wheels?

Recommended Posts

After all day re-searching, ringing around, querying etc. I still have no idea on which beadlock wheels to buy :(

I need a 15x8 wheel with 3.5" backspacing to fit rrc.

I have looked at both single and double lockers, but still don't know what one.

So far I have been looking at;

-Mach 5 beadlocks

-Allied rockathon

-MRW rockcrawling wheels

-Stazworks

-Portal rover's double beadlocks

The reason why I cannot decide would be down to problems with all wheels.

-The mach 5's have got problems at the factory atm and are currently being rectified.

-Allied are all the way over in the states so shipping is abit pricey and backspacing is all extra along with colours etc.

-MRW same as Allied but even more expensive

-Stazworks are only suited to one tyre that you have specified in the making, so if I choose to change tyres it will cost me to have new inserts

-And portal rover has the same problem as Stazworks in terms of changing tyres but also are under a brand new design because of faults

Ideally I don't wnat to be spending mega money here, however I do want a quality wheel at my specification. Obviously I am not going to get a perfect wheel, they do not exist, however I need a compromise of a wheel that is more good than bad

Any idea's or help would be most appreciated

;)

You know what my answer will be

Just buy the tyres you want to run and then you don't have an issue. Stazworks are a custom rim which just gives you so many more options.

Some porn pictures to tempt you:

Cold rolled rings to help stop you bending beads - it can be done

Dont you already have some single beadlocks? just weld another beedlock ring on the back.

Cheap, easy, relativley quick and you have wheels you like? with the right offset and not constrained to one type of tyre.

Yep, already have some Bt Fabrication beadlocks on modulars, and they are great. Would use them but the mickey thompson's are 15" and my beadlocks are 16" :( Bought the tyres for a good price so can't grumble really when they are £282 each new.

Will, you devil! That rim looks pretty dam pucker. Couldn't give me a rough idea of price could you????

Thanks for the link Dave. I will give them a call tomorrow to find out how much they want per rim and to see whether they can do special orders.

Another split rim make is Herero4x4 from Italy. Had a look at their ones on display at Billing and one of their features was the internal section was made up from several sections to provide 2 rings, held apart by adjustable screw threads so the width could be adjusted.

Is the Staun not classed as a double beadlocker? And how much is a set of 5?

Yes it is a double beadlock. They cost about £70 each in US and seem to vary quite a bit over here in Europe going up to £150. Devon 4x4 were most reasonable when I looked with each costing about £115inc.

They are very popular in US, less so over here.

I ran Staun for a while, biggest drawbacks were balance issues, leaks and them making tyre repair a complete PITA, even when compared to removing and replacing 32 bolts !

I'd also dispute the suggestion that they lock both beads, they weren't wide enough to lock both beads on my 8 inch wheels. I thought they would lock both until I fitted them for a "photo shoot". When fitted to the rim without a tyre and inflated to 40psi they were still 2 inches away from the inner rim. Maybe they've started making a wider version as it would have been 2004 when I fitted mine.

Having changed from Staun to Allied "proper" bead locks I wouldn't voluntarily go back to using Stauns again, mechanical bead locks are much less hassle.

Right, I have got a price for my spec on some rockathons from Redpath tyres and they want around £180 + vat per wheels, so £211.50 per corner plus delivery. Thats too much again.

Anyone got any suggestions for a half decent wheel that is reasonably priced?

I have emailed portal rover for their prices on double beadlocks and some pictures of their new design, so shall find out Monday what they are like.

TBH I'd save for now - spend it once, spend it right!
