Briarston
Have heard some horror stories about these seals, mainly the rear one, on 200tdi engines. I have rebuilt many engines over the last 40odd years but never one of these. Are the seals really as difficult to fit properly as a number of people say? Are the seals really of such poor quality as some suggest? Any advice from those who know these engines would be much appreciated!
jcwcooper
If you use patten seals then yes they can be pritty bad, best thing is to use genuine and then they tend to last. Dave.
ciderman
Its a shame that Land rover crank seals dont come with a fitting sleeve , This makes the job a whole lot better . Edited to add a vital word I missed out on original post .
western
I wouldn't call the genuine LR seal unreliable my 200Tdi's rear seal is still the original [14 years old & in excess of 360,000miles ] & is still doing it's primary task well. gruntus
Hi Briarston, A good quality rear crank seal is about £20 and I got mine from Turner Engineering. I havent had the engine running yet but was advised by Frida Turner that the types you get in the bottom end set are rubbish. On comparison there is a world of difference in quality. The one from Turners is a Dowty item with a fitting sleeve and the one in the Elring bottom end set is of a hard rubber type (not fitting sleeve). When you look at the Dowty seal it has a sort of large sealing area that looks a bit like a funnel mouth as it goes over the crank (poor description sorry!) that will close and continue to seal on the crank as (if) it wears however the one in the gasket set is a hard lip type. gruntus
To tell you the truth I bought new oil seals direct from Land Rover for the Camshaft and Crankshaft seals in the cam box as well (one was missing from the kit anyway). Crank was about a fiver but the cam seal was about £8. Difference in quality is really obvious. Cheers G

FridaT
Rear oil seals for the 2.25 5mb, 2.5, TD, TDI and including 300TDI - ensure it is green and most importantly stamped with Dowty as mentioned above. There are some very similar looking replacement seals about and unfortunately now LR is owned by Tata we have found that these seals have started to appear in genuine LR packets and gasket sets. These seals are poor quality and carry a high risk of failure. If you compare the 300TDI rear oil seal run with the original Dowty rear oil seal it is actually 4 - 5mm further out. You can work out for yourselves what the end result would be when fitting one of those. FridaT www.turner-engineering.co.uk
