Recovery Points

So it looks like i'll be getting myself a discovery soon as an offroad plaything.

Just wondering what people have done for recovery points. I dont want to start fitting HD bumpers and things, as i'd like to keep the costs down, so i'm looking at things i can do to provide good quality recovery points with the standard bumpers etc.

Anyone got any ideas?

For the front of a Discovery I would use 2 of these Pulling Points every time. post-264-1244358066_thumb.jpgThey utterlise more mounting points than the single bolt jates (thus making a stronger/safer pulling point) and are easier to use then the jates that are fitted underneath the chassis.

You don't have to modify the front air dam or bumper when you fit these...but I would remover the bumper anyway before it gets ripped off.

No, it isn't just you; they look very flimsy to me as well.

Of course, someone will pop up shortly to quite correctly say you should use forged Jate rings in preference to fabricated versions.

BUT, having seen videos of some of Streaky's recovery operations, from deep sand, I would go for his suggested fabrication every time, spreading the chassis load over several attachment points, AND having an attachment point that is easier to access with less (or no) digging, mud or sand, than a well buried Jate ring.

But I'm not an Expert! Good Luck.

Would this plate simply bolt to one side of the front chassis? Do the holes the bolts use have appropriate anticrush tubes/reinforcing in them? If not how would i go about adding them?

I presume i would fit a shackle like this:

To the hole in the end of the "pulling plate"?

Any pics of them fitted?

I was planning to remove the lower plastic section of the bumper anyway.

Even with forged jates its still a single rather puny looking bolt thats holding it on... so this seems like a better idea.

IMHO Thats a MINIMUM for 4x4 recovery, better would be 4.75T

and the added advantage of being a bit bigger stropes and ropes will fit !! :lol:

I often use bigger rated shackles - really for the ability to shove 2 ends of a

strop in for a tree steady on a winch recovery without having to mess about

I see many people with the shackles above finding things are too tight a fit

4.75T Rated are not expensive
