td5 defender ecu

hi guys!

please help needed from ecu's experts

just bought an ecu from ebay....it said it came out from a Defender 2004 td5! and that was what i wanted cos i have a 2000 TD5 and with that ecu i couldnt remap it to get more power cos the ecu is not programmable!

The part number is NNN500020....1st question pls....is that really a defender ecu part number?

cos when i connected it to the nanocom it said it is set with autobox ...and as far as i know no defender td5 came out with an autobox!!

one of the faults that worried me was coolant temp circuit current!! the temp on the gauge reads super fine! cannot find y there is a fault with the coolant temp if it reads good!

i got to know that if u put a remap of a discovery on a defender ecu probably the temp will read the other way round on the gauge...but that is not my case! couldnt find some other issue which explains the fault in the coolant temp.

no mine is NNN500020 NOT NNN500250!!!!

i need to know pls how i can clear the coolant temp curcuit fault!

let me rephrase the autobox thing.....it is showing that it has an autobox fault!!! if its a defender ecu it is supposed to be set on manual! right?

If you do a search on here and the net you'll get a lot of info on this.

The first thing to say is that your 2000 TD5 ECU can be re-mapped. There are two very reputable firms who get recommended on here: IRB developments and Bell Auto Services. Both will open up the old ECU and put a reprogrammable chip in it.

The second thing to say is that swapping the ECU brings a host of problems - Ian from IRB posts on here as Porny and I'm sure he made a post once listing all the problems with trying to swap ECU's over and how hard it is to get them to run right.

So I'd sell on the new ECU and get your old one converted.

A NNN500020 will work OK in an earlier td5, I've got one in mine, I replaced mine because the original one died altogether.

I also get the "coolant temp circuit current" error along with the other faults, Auto gearbox, air con etc. but I just ignore them now, they don't seem to make any difference.

The only problem I got since changing the ECU is that when the engine is started from cold, initially it wont rev up, if you floor the loud pedal it coughs and chugs a bit and chucks out loads of blue/grey smoke, if left to tick over for a minute it then runs normally.

I thought the issue with the coolant temp might be related to the problem and replaced the coolant temp sender with a later one but that made no difference.

It runs better since having a couple of faulty injectors replaced last week but it still does it a bit.

Do you get any running problems with yours?

Direct replacement but you'll have to put your injector codes in.
Sort of... but not really.

If you want to run a flash ecu (post 2002) on a Pre 2002 Td5 then you need to use the correct files!!

An EU3 file (and the engine for that matter) is very different to a EU2 engine and file.

Although it 'will' physically run - it would be far from ideal.

In all honesty I wouldn't bother....

Going back to the remap question...

All td5's ECU's can be 'remapped' - it is only the process that is different.

Post 2002 (flash) ECU's are done via OBD11 (i.e. the diagnostic socket).... early ECU's (none flash) require a physical chip change on the main ECU board. Both methods will give the same final outcome.

crwoody...same as mine!!! same faults...exactly the same!!! at first i thought that i bought the wrong ecu as it gave me an autobox error!!! cannot understand this!!! how can a defender ecu gives an auto box error!!! if no defender came out with an autobox!!! i'm with this ecu for two days now so cannot really tell any running problems! but till now no problems at all except the coolant temp circuit and autobox fualts!!!! i know it runs ok even with the faults but i would like to clear them out!!!

i would like to do what ur advising anderzander but here in malta there is no one who do a non-flashable ecu (pre 2002) flashable...by replacing some internal chips!!! so i had to put a side that option. hope u understand!!!

is it possible to send my 2000 ecu to uk and change the internal chip and get it remapped there and they send it back to me!?

Didn't realise you were in Malta! I think someone would help you out.

Do a search for IRB developments or Bell Auto Services - and send them both an email, and see what they say.

I've heard TD5Alive are good too but have had no dealings with them.
